Just yesterday, people couldn't wait to spend thousands more to jump into an SUV with operating costs that promised parasitic wallet drain throughout the life of ownership. Now that hybrids are the hype, people are instead blowing thousands of dollars to save hundreds worth of gas. Spending to waste more has given way to spending to save less. Let's just say consumers are evolving and not comment about the pace.
Don't get me wrong, I think hybrids are one of technology's more intriguing and promising creations. It's just that when comparing Toyota's international star to alumni from the School of Combustion, it doesn't yet fall on the right side of the cost-benefit equation.
