2005 Toyota Tacoma Review

Bigger, bolder, brawnier.
The compact pickup truck class is undergoing an evolution of sorts: extinction. In just the past few months, 80% of the members buffed up, bulked out, and started calling themselves mid-size. Can't blame em. As trucks take on more full-time assignments as surrogate cars, consumers have been thinking outside the box, so to speak. That is, paying less attention to the cargo box and a lot more to the passenger compartment and road manners. Also, Toyota has now been blasted twice in a row - with the T100 and Tundra - for making a truck that's too small, and these guys didn't become the world's most profitable automaker by ignoring customers.

All these factors mean that Toyota's once-little truck just got its first ground-up redesign since adapting the Tacoma name ten years ago. Extensive it is. Length and wheelbase on all models are up a good six-or-so inches, and width nearly a full foot. It's a tad taller, and Toyota added a super-elongated Crew Cab Long Bed model, bringing the body count to four and possibly cannibalizing the Tundra.
