EXPERT REVIEWS & RATINGS

2008 Hyundai Accent
Despite the cheap interior, tiny tires, and moderately goofy looks, this is one of the most fun cars I've driven lately. SE models get a neat B&M shifter and sport-tuned suspension. That helps balance out the 110-hp engine and makes the Accent a blast to toss around.

I didn't record gas mileage, but I'm positive the Accent has respectable consumption. When I filled the tank, which was about half full when I got to the station, it only cost $18.00. I'm sure there are a ton of buyers who would love to be able to fill up for less than to fill up for less than $50.00 right now.

The Hyundai Accent led the modern subcompact rush.

But Accent prices start as low as $11,425, and as this story was written, a $1,500 rebate could get you into an Accent for less than $10,000.

It has the same traits as a subcompact: a buzzy four-cylinder engine, highway fuel economy over 30 mpg, a goofy name, and low curb weight.

The Accent has none of the gaping grilles and chunky C-pillars that seem to be the youthful calling cards of modern subcompacts.

The Accent's list of standard equipment is what we've come to expect of subcompacts: power windows, locks and mirrors; keyless entry; air conditioning and a CD player. There's also the full salvo of safety equipment including six air bags, anti-lock brakes and a tire pressure monitoring system.

In SE trim, the Accent comes standard with a B&M Racing sport shifter attached to the five-speed manual gearbox. Shifts are quick and easy to find, yet still a bit clunky. Paired together, the engine and transmission provide adequate acceleration and an engaging drive. Fuel economy is competitive, with manual Accents rated at 27 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, and automatics delivering 24 mpg and 33 mpg, respectively.

The Hyundai Accent is a competent subcompact car that's big inside and sprightly underway. It includes an impressive array of standard safety features and is certainly worthy of being considered alongside more expensive models from other manufacturers. The hatchback coupe adds a strong dose of sporty styling, plus more cargo-hauling versatility, with no significant loss of passenger space.
