EXPERT REVIEWS & RATINGS

Motor Trend Rating:
Quick Test: 2008 Nissan Altima 2.5 SL
The Altima's interior materials are some of the best in its class.

In light of the potent 270-hp V-6 Altima 3.5 SE, there's no penalty for getting one with two fewer cylinders. Our 2.5 SL's exterior and interior look great, its controls are easy to use, and the engine and transmission are excellent. But it's certainly not the sportiest family sedan on the market, just one of the most expensive.

Motor Trend Rating:
First Drive: 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe
Nissan is the latest automaker to exploit the enticing potential of turning heads and profits at a single stroke, spinning a slick coupe variant from its new-for-2007 Altima sedan and offering it in 2.5 S and 3.5 SE trims. We recently sampled a preproduction 3.5 SE and found this front-driver a solid performer with sufficient look and cook to become a formidable player in what's turning into an increasingly crowded field.

2008 Nissan Altima Hybrid
The first thing everyone wants to know about hybrids is their fuel economy, and the Altima's is quite good, with EPA ratings of 35 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, about on a par with the Toyota's 33/34 mpg ratings.

Nissan might not be a hybrid pioneer, but they've still fielded a very competitive offering.

Overall, the Altima has a pleasant, real-car quality to it, whereas some hybrids can feel a bit like a science-fair project. At the same time, its fuel economy benefits are substantial, unlike "mild hybrids" such as GM's Chevy Malibu and Saturn Aura.

2008 Nissan Altima Coupe
In online forums, the new Altima coupe has been dubbed "the poor man's Infiniti G35."

We suspect, however, that the Altima coupe's target audience cares more about styling and value than front- versus rear-wheel-drive dynamics.

2008 Nissan Altima Review
Not a two-door knock off of the Altima sedan, the Coupe shares but one body panel with its four-door sibling. More important, the Coupe departs significantly from the sedan's dimensions. And with positive results.

Power-wise, the Altima Coupe tops both the current Accord and Solara, although the 2008 models of those two have yet to appear in dealerships and we're expecting an overhaul of the Toyota.

The 2008 Altima Coupe is not a great car nor is it a standout in the segment.

Sporty handling and responsive engines make the Nissan Altima fun to drive.

Recently redesigned, the 2008 Nissan Altima is a midsize car with the performance and feel of a luxury sedan, at least when equipped with the V6 engine and a generous list of options. The Altima is roomy and comfortable and has stylish looks. The Altima is available with a strong four-cylinder engine, a gas-sipping electric Hybrid, or a powerful V6. The Altima offers a sporty alternative to the other midsize sedans and we think it's a good choice.
