About the Scion xD
|
The 2008 Scion xD replaces the Toyota division's cute, efficient xA. Introduced four years ago, the xA was a popular subcompact. Scion's grand plan is to offer new models frequently, so it was time for the xA to go. While the xD is all new, shoppers can think of it as the second generation of the xA. In spirit and execution, it remains essentially the same: A small, efficient, relatively inexpensive four-door hatchback aimed at young, stylish buyers. The new xD has a boxier roofline and more bulbous hood. We think it has lost some of the distinctiveness of the xA, but the xD can be dressed up into a unique, good-looking car, and that remains part of the Scion plan. The new xD is designed for easy personalization, and Scion offers dozens of dealer-installed parts, starting with an array of custom wheels.Click here to read more

2008 Scion xD: New model, new look, same Scion message
Unlike the xB, the xD gets a more traditional driver centered dash layout, though it features a trick concentric gauge cluster that shows speed and rpm on one dial, with their respective needles fluttering independently. The xD's new 2ZR-FE 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine is Toyota's first application of dual variable valve timing in a compact car. At 128 horses, it's less powerful than the 2.4-liter in the new xB and tC, but more frugal and sophisticated. The EPA estimates combined fuel economy for the xD at 30 mpg with the five-speed manual. A four-speed automatic also is available, without the xB's sequential shifting feature.

Preview: 2008 Scion xD
The xD takes over for the xA as Scion's cheapest model, but unlike the redesigned xB, the xD stays close to the brand's original mission to offer a small, economical, inexpensive car.

2008 Scion xD
The xA is now called the xD, and it's no longer competing for quite the same customer as the xB. The xB has grown to be more of a real car, while the xD is as tiny and fuel efficient as you'd expect from something that Toyota calls an "urban subcompact." At 2625 pounds, the xD is light, but it's some 285 pounds heavier than the outgoing xA.

Scion Xb & Xd - Scion-ese Twins
What's surprising is how similar the xA and the xD look. And, to our eyes, neither has the funky, Japanese-anime quality that made the original xB stand out on the street.

2008 Scion xD Review - We Really Like It, But...
If you're looking for an inexpensive, fuel-efficient ride for the daily commute, and are thinking about enhancing its look or comfort with aftermarket equipment, the xD is perfect. But if you're looking for performance, look somewhere else. The xD was designed to do many things well, all of which, had little to do with performance.

2008 Scion xD Review
In spirit and execution, it remains essentially the same: A small, efficient, relatively inexpensive four-door hatchback aimed at young, stylish buyers. On paper, the Scion xD has the right stuff. Scion has dared to be different, by its own edict, and that's obvious from the driver's seat of the 2008 Scion xD. The seats are covered in dark charcoal fabric and are quite handsome, especially when compared to the cloth that comes with some other cars in this class. The xD is comfortable, without wallowing in a way that makes the driver think the car is floating around underneath. It's slightly bigger, heavier, and costs a little more, and it offers slightly less interior space. It has a bigger engine, and with the manual transmission performs well.
