4x4 SUV Comparison: 2008 Hummer H3 Alpha, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, Land Rover LR2, Nissan Xterra, a...
Time for my redemption, and with its beige body and white top, the FJ looks more than ready to assist. Its 4.0-liter V-6 makes plenty of torque (278 pound-feet) and the Bridgestones seem to have just enough grip.

On paper, the Toyota FJ Cruiser is tough to beat. It's the most affordable, one of the best at the track, and returns the best fuel economy of the body-on-frame bunch: 15.5 mpg. Behind the wheel, it's smooth on the road and unstoppable off of it. It's a serious off-roader, but one marred by serious packaging flaws. Flip-out rear doors make second-row seat-loading difficult in tight situations.

Great value, outsanding track performance, and excellent manners on road and off. Too bad butch styling hinders visibility and practicality.

Auto News: 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser Gains Significant Safety Features
The Toyota FJ Cruiser, which melds the brand's off-road legacy with distinct heritage design in a modern SUV, gains standard front seat-mounted side airbags and first- and second-row side curtain airbags for 2008.

With styling cues reminiscent of Toyota's famed FJ40 4x4 utility vehicle, sold in the U.S. from 1960 to 1983, the FJ Cruiser offers a youthful, contemporary spirit and employs the same state-of-the-art, power, comfort, safety, and convenience technology available in all Toyota SUVs.

"The FJ Cruiser is one of the most serious off-road capable SUVs available today, yet it delivers all the quality and value expected from any Toyota and is suitably refined for everyday driving," said Jim Lentz, Toyota Motor Sales executive vice president.

The FJ Cruiser's interior combines heritage-inspired design with the comfort and convenience of a modern Toyota SUV.

The FJ Cruiser is optimized to operate in dusty, muddy environments, and so easy cleaning and maintenance are important qualities for its interior.

2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser Review
Today's FJ Cruiser is designed to be the most capable of all Toyotas when the pavement gives way to gravel, sand, and rocks.

We found the FJ Cruiser superb in rugged terrain but comfortable on the road.

The design evokes the heritage of the FJ40 and other early Land Cruisers without being retro.

Like the exterior, the interior of the Toyota FJ Cruiser reflects the character of the early FJs, especially when equipped with the optional body-colored door panel inserts. The standard dashboard looks like an extruded aluminum beam, with audio and climate controls set into a body-colored panel in the center.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser is quite capable off road, even more so than the highly capable 4Runner on which it is based. The FJ offers better approach and departure angles, a shorter wheelbase, and a higher ground clearance.

Now in its second season, the FJ Cruiser is still Toyota's newest sport utility vehicle and its most capable when it comes to getting where you want to go when there's no pavement beneath your tires.
