2009 Acura RL

The 2009 Acura RL is comfortable and quiet and comes equipped with a bevy of features standard, keeping with Acura's philosophy of short options lists. Underhood rests an SOHC 3.7L V-6 with VTEC on intake and exhaust valves. The engine is smooth while circling its 300-hp powerband and returns 16/22 city/highway mpg. It's mated to a five-speed transmission; six speeds forward is more common in this class now, but the ratios are spot on and the powerband is wide, so there's no downside to being short one cog.

Is the 2009 Acura RL the brand's most controversial application of the power plenum grille? Unlike the completely redesigned TL and TSX sedans, the RL is just a refresh, which may explain why the grille seems so conspicuous.

Acura didn't forget about the car's rear styling, either. A redesigned decklid, LED taillights, and lower fascia make clear this is a new Acura RL. Attractive 18-in. wheels -- one in. larger than those on the 2008 Acura RL -- complement the visual changes.

The rich man's Accord gets some upgrades for 2009 in an attempt to make a more aggressive luxury sedan. New front and rear clips along with larger wheels and tires give the Acura RL a different look, one that Acura says will become the brand's new style. Officials want their cars to be unmistakably Acura when seen from afar.

Engine displacement is bumped up to 3.7 liters, bringing V-6 output to an even 300 hp with torque at 271 lb-ft. That newfound power is routed through an upgraded transmission. An improved all-wheel-drive system and modified steering and suspension round out the dynamic changes.
