2009 BMW X5

During our recent test of the 2009 BMW X5 xDrive 35d, we found BMW's 3.0L turbodiesel straight six (also available for the 3 Series) smooth, quiet, and potent.

Though the engine produces a stunning 425 lb-ft of torque at just 1750 rpm, the forward surge doesn't feel dramatic. It's progressive, but nonetheless quick. At 6.7 sec from 0-to-60 mph, Civic Si owners should think twice before trying to out-accelerate this 5111-lb SUV from a stoplight.

Best diesel mileage and clearly the driver's choice but stratospheric cost and narrow bandwidth bar it from the podium.

Our test session's major surprise isn't that the 2009 BMW X5 trumps all in braking and handling. It's that the BMW doesn't sweep the acceleration tests as well. Despite a class-leading 425 pound-feet of torque, the 2009 X5 is soundly beaten to 60 mph by the smooth-whirring Lexus RX 450h.

Powered by an inline six-cylinder diesel, the new 2009 BMW X5 35d exemplifies the more performance-oriented European approach to fuel economy in North America.

By combining small and large turbos, the engine develops as much as 390 pound-feet of torque at 1500 rpm, and 425 pound-feet at just 1750 rpm, before reaching peak horsepower of 265 at 4200 rpm. A six-speed automatic supplies the right gear for any situation--0-to-60 mph can be achieved in 6.9 seconds. Because fuel economy is rated at 18 mpg city and 26 highway, the 2009 BMW X5 35d qualifies for a $1550 tax credit.
