2009 Motor Trend Car of the Year: Introduction and Contenders
Styling and features of Camry in more fuel-efficient package

In the world of compacts, the Toyota Corolla, a presence in the U.S. since 1968, is automotive royalty.

With every generation, the Corolla further solidifies its reputation of reliability and fuel efficiency.

Created to compete with the likes of the Civic Si and Mazdaspeed 3, the XRS is neither as fun to drive nor as interesting.

From a commuter-car perspective, it doesn't hold up against the standard Civic and Mazda3 either, as its rough ride (presumably better with the standard suspension), material quality in the cabin, and lack of seat support left many wanting.

Quick Test: 2009 Toyota Corolla XRS
New for 2009, this sportiest of Corollas borrows the Camry's 2.4-liter four-banger, pairs it to a five-speed automatic, and then attacks the road with help from a sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch wheels, and an aggressive body kit.

"The 2009 Toyota Corolla's like an xB sedan, yet it's not as fun to drive," says senior editor Ed Loh, inserting, "This thing needs thicker anti-roll bars and more damping." As it is, the XRS rides rather rough, exhibits prevalent body roll, and houses a zealous electronic nanny.

Toyota's New Street Fighters- 2009 Corolla and Matrix XRS
No Corolla without an AE86 chassis code has been a hit with the Super Street crowd, and this new NG chassis car likely won't win over any of the SS faithful. The '09 Corolla is a good car, and for those that only expect to get from Point A to Point B reliably, this car will suit their needs just fine.

2009 Toyota Corolla Review
Younger and older buyers alike appreciate low purchase and operating costs, and previously Toyota Corollas have proven reliable and not an expensive insurance proposition. First-time drivers will do well with straightforward controls, minimal distractions, and standard passive safety equipment, and many older drivers will appreciate the same things for different reasons

With such a large audience, the 2009 Toyota Corolla skips the fringes and focuses on a pleasant interior designed more to offend no one than to excite just a few.

The all-new 2009 Toyota Corolla is an practical sedan that by way of its myriad configurations can be used for virtually any application.
