The next-generation 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee will use a new V-6 engine, dubbed the Phoenix, with cylinder-deactivation technology, and a carlike unibody construction for a more compact design.

The Phoenix V-6 can shut down three cylinders when under low loads, reportedly saving 6% to 8% in fuel consumption, while also saving on emissions. Chrysler is hoping to create a vehicle that's more appealing to the mainstream public with a more pump-friendly SUV that offers better around-town handling thanks to the unibody construction.

The 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee will likely share a platform with the next Mercedes-Benz ML-Class. Independent rear suspension is already on the ML, which makes for better seating options and space, and that could mean two or even three rows for the G.C. It's also possible this platform could be the basis for a Durango, if execs don't feel it would dilute the Dodge or Jeep brands too much. Expect a choice of Phoenix V-6 gas engines, 4.7- and 5.7-liter V-8s, a two-mode Hemi like that in the Durango, and possibly a 3.0- to 3.5-liter turbodiesel.
