2010 Porsche Cayenne

Although it looks very similar to the current Cayenne thanks to Porsche's evolutionary approach to redesigns, the second-generation model is said to be smaller, lighter and more fuel-efficient. Our spy photographer also points out that this new Porsche Cayenne handled corners with greater ease than its predecessor, so some chassis tinkering is likely afoot as well.

Noticeable changes include door-mounted mirrors like those on the Panamera, a more sloping greenhouse, and reworked taillights and tailgate. The giant platter-size rotors that can be seen behind the wheels of this particular prototype could mean that this is the Turbo model.

In addition to the expected V-6 and multiple V-8 models, diesel and hybrid versions will also no doubt be offered (at least in Europe). A range topping version powered by a V-10 is also rumored to be in development -- although given the present emissions regulations, we'd be surprised if it makes it past the drawing board.

Key to this lighter-polluting Porsche Cayenne S is its 52-hp three-phase synchronous electric motor providing up to 221 lb-ft of torque via 38 kW NiMH batteries. Joined to it is an Audi-sourced direct-injection 3.0L V-6 (333-hp/324 lb-ft) and a Cayenne-first eight-speed automatic transmission. Top speed is had in sixth, with the two higher gears serving to bump up mpg performance.

As a parallel hybrid, the 2010 Porsche Cayenne can operate in full electric, all combustion engine, or a combination of both modes. A Hybrid Manager switches between each almost seamlessly, engineers say, and can operate under the power of electric motor alone for 1.2 miles -- which isn't far, but it does the trick when in stop and go traffic. While cruising on the highway it can coast without the need of the gasoline engine.

The 2010 Porsche Cayenne S Transsyberia will use the 405-hp, 4.8L V-8 engine used in the Cayenne GTS, but instead of a standard six-speed manual, a Tiptronic S six-speed automatic transmission with a 4.11:1 final drive ratio will be used. Air suspension comes standard along with the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). Being a rally car, all-wheel-drive is a given, and the permanent all-wheel-drive systems splits the torque with a 38/62 split.

Four different color combinations are available for the 2010 Cayenne S Transsyberia: black, silver metallic, black with meteor gray accents, and meteor gray with silver accents. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are standard, along with exclusive "Cayenne S Transsyberia" side strips, and optional off-road roof lights. An optional off-road package is available, and it comes with a variable and lockable rear differential for rocky terrain, rock rails with integrated skid plates, a reinforced engine-bay guard, and enhanced protection for the fuel tank and rear axle.

The special-edition 2010 Porsche Cayenne S will be available in the first half of 2009 in Europe and North America, and the starting price will be at $70,800.
