2011 Acura RL Review

Competent and comfortable, but no flagship

Reviewed by Automotive on

In a Nutshell
The 2011 Acura RL is a luxury sedan that has reached the end of the road, since a successor to it in 2012 is not planned. The Acura RL has the Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) married to a V-6 churning 300 horsepower and a six-speed automatic transmission, giving the RL superb road handling.

Luxurious interior features are plentiful and it is extremely comfortable. The subframe of the RL has been updated and the fuel economy rating has improved to 16 mpg city / 22 mpg highway. The 2011 Acura RL provides an extensive safety system, such as you would expect of car in this class. In addition to the base sedan, technology, and advance packages are offered.

Comments:

The 2011 Acura RL has slightly increased fuel mileage compared to earlier years but only marginally. Sound insulation has made the cabin of the vehicle quieter and more enjoyable with the luxury-like interior; however the exterior does not have a modern look and seems to be more retro than anything. There is an optional rear-view camera in the 2011 model that may come in useful; however it does not come standard. Although still the flagship for Acura, the RL has not been able to win over the hearts and minds of shoppers, who cite its high price tag and undesired retro look as reasons to shop elsewhere. It also has a grille that many find off-putting. This car has always been easy to handle, and the 2011 model is no exception. The all-wheel drive allows the vehicle to respond to the slightest touch, and also for the 2011 to have traction control improved. However, even with all of aforementioned changes to the 2011 RL model, other luxury sedans continue to outsell it. The price of the RL certainly has something to do with this phenomenon, as the RL is priced higher than most shoppers are willing to spend. With so many mid-sized luxury sedans on the market, Acura needs to step up the game if they expect to stay on the market.
