2012 Acura RL Review

Long due for a replacement

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview
As the brand's flagship, the Acura RL was once a compelling buy in the premium luxury class. That was back in 2005, when it was completely redesigned to debut Acura's new styling prowess and Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system. Six years later, however, the 2012 Acura RL shows its age with a frumpy grille and no plans for a V-8 engine.

The Acura RL is still a comfortable ride, with an array of technology for drivers to stay in touch. And with 300 horsepower from its V-6 engine, the 2012 Acura RL is sporty. But the biggest reason not to buy an Acura RL may come from Acura itself: The 2012 Acura TL, which has been continuously improved, redesigned, and has increased in power and fuel efficiency, while the RL sat stagnant. The competition from Lexus and Infiniti pack V-8 engines and rear-wheel drive, so the RL sticks out even more in the segment. It may get a redesign in 2013, possibly with a V-8 engine, so if you want to get a good deal on a well-equipped luxury car, now's the time to act.

Comments:

There is no doubting the abilities of the 2012 Acura RL. Competing with the best of the luxury sedan market thanks to its 300 horsepower V6 engine, stylish interior, state of the art navigation systems, and all wheel drive, the 2012 Acura RL deserves much more attention than it is given. The Acura RL does not lack accolades because it is missing any kind of features or power; rather it just has a very old look to it. With a style that is no longer hot, the Acura RL struggles to keep up with its competition in popularity. Another big issue with the Acura RL is that is it expensive to own. Compared to similar models it does not have a cheap price tag. It gets decent fuel economy with 17 city and 26 highway though. For the cost you get a beautiful interior that is decorated with wood trims, a voice controlled navigation systems, and good power and speed. Two noteworthy problems: the Acura RL has very limited trunk space with only roughly 13 cubic feet and the brakes are significantly weaker than that of the competition stopping after 131 feet at 60 mph where competition stops at 121 feet at 60 mph. While it does have a lot of great features, what it is lacking is significant and it is hard to get over its brake testing results.
