Acura was specifically designed for the United States market with secondary goals for the smaller Canadian market. Acura became the first Japanese luxury model, designed to compete in North America with European makes such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW. After a successful North American campaign and brand introduction in the mid-1980s Acura was introduced to the Hong Kong automotive market in 1991. Since then Acura expanded offerings to China and Mexico, where many Central and South American drivers travel to purchase it.Acura in America
Introduced to the American and Canadian public in 1986 and offered through joint Honda-Acura dealerships, the first Japanese luxury automobiles enjoyed an immediate spike in popularity and boasted impressive sales. The brand used the slogan, "Acura. Precision Crafted Performance." The welcoming of Acura within North America served as a catalyst to hasten the development of Japanese luxury lines namely Lexus, the premium offering from the Toyota Motor Corporation, and Infiniti offered by Nissan.
The Acura Legend was a car jointly developed by Honda and the Austin Rover Group of Great Britain. The result became the luxury flagship of the Acura brand. Additionally, Acura offered the Integra, a sporty hatchback designed to catch the eye of city dwellers and drivers who preferred a more compact design.
By 1990, Acura was outselling Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Lexus at a tremendous rate. The Acura Legend served as the best-selling luxury automobile in the United States.
The 1990s saw a peak and eventual decline in sales as Acura introduced the Acura NSX high performance sports car as well as the Acura Vigor performance sedan. The Integra received a drastic redesign making it incredibly popular with "tuners" and race enthusiasts. However the end of the decade proved to be a challenge to the North American Acura market.
In response to the decline in sales Acura engineers and the various design teams offered redesigns to the popular models while introducing the popular TL, RSX, and MDX from 2000 to 2004. The crossover MDX became the game changer as every automotive manufacturer scrambled to compete. It was widely considered the cream of the crop among all other vehicles in its crossover class and soared to the top of several car magazine "best of" lists. Acura proved to be popular in the 21st century as the premium automotive manufacturer continues to diversify and collect awards for innovation and design.Acura Models
