1999 AM General Hummer Review
Not pretty but powerful.
Reviewed by Automotive on
Introduced to the civilian population in 1992, the AM General Hummer brings all the qualities appreciated by the military to a vehicle for off-road enjoyment by the regular Joe. Rugged enough to take a beating, with minimal comfort and visual appeal, the 1999 AM General Hummer still accomplishes some things other off-road vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler simply can’t manage.
Engines: 6.5-liter turbocharged V-8
Transmissions: four-speed automatic
Models: AM General Hummer Hard Top, AM General Hummer Open Top, AM General Hummer Wagon
Two new colors, a revised dashboard, and a new fob for the keyless entry system mark the highlights for the 1999 model of the AM General Hummer. Other changes include a simplified wiring system and better coverage of the glass. As far as the wiring is concerned, it has been redone for the heated windshield. A new traction control system, the TorqTrac4, debuts as well.
The manufacturer offers eight color choices for the exterior of the 1999 AM General Hummer. These include black, white, bright white, candy apple, competition yellow, mesa dusk, night storm, and mesa dusk. Overall, the AM General Hummer is a big vehicle, so drivers might find it difficult to maneuver through city streets. However, it makes an ideal choice for offroading.
Interior colors also remain similar to the original Hummer roots when the U.S. used it as a military vehicle. It offers three colors for the vinyl interior: black, cloud gray, and sandstorm. Interior comfort features remain sparse. Highlights include power windows and door locks, air-conditioning in the front and rear, and an AM/FM/ cassette stereo system for entertainment.
Performance & Handling
With a towing ability that is capable of hauling over 8500 pounds and 195 horsepower with 430 lb-ft of torque, this beast of an off-road vehicle gets the job done. The 1999 Am General Hummer offers enough power to complete almost any task.
The TorqTrac4 (TT4) system automatically engages when it feels a wheel slipping, providing ideal traction control for those slippery places where every second of control counts.
As a vehicle originally produced for military use, safety marks a primarily focus on the outer frame and sheer weight of the 1999 AM General Hummer. Four-wheel ABS also helps with safety assurance for passengers. The body design means less rollover potential and better handling when driving over rough terrain.
