2007 Aston Martin DB9 Review

A high-performance sports car with plenty of luxurious features, but it comes at a hefty price.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2007 Aston Martin DB9 appeals to drivers who want a high-performance vehicle with a ton of power and super cool aesthetics, but don't want to spend a fortune on a car like the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. It provides the perfect solution for a high wage earner entering a mid-life crisis or a good saver who wants to own an impressive piece of machinery that gets noticed.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe, convertible
Engines: 5.9-liter V-12
Transmissions: six-speed manual, six-speed automatic
Models: Aston Martin DB9, Aston Martin DB9 Volante

What's New

Both the Aston Martin DB9 coupe and Volante (convertible) receive several new features for 2007. Both models come standard with dual-stage heaters, memory settings for drivers, LED lights on the door handles, and a newly designed front seat with an occupant classification sensor. The coupe and Volante also come with auto-dimming rear-view mirrors and a trunk-release button on the key fob.

Buyers can add a Sports Pack to the coupe version. This offers a stiffer suspension, 19-inch wheels made of forged aluminum, and a lighter overall weight.

One of the most important changes, however, concerns a feature missing from the 2007 Aston Martin DB9. While earlier versions have a top-speed limiter that maxes out at 165 mph, drivers can push this DB9 up to 186 mph. That's illegal on almost every road in the U.S., but now you can get even more out of this high-performance machine on the rare occasion that you absolutely won't get pulled over or endanger other drivers.

The 2007 Aston Martin DB9 has a classic sports car look that makes anyone look cool. It features 19-inch wheels, a low profile, and stretched headlights. It could easily sit in as Batman's secondary vehicle. It doesn't, however, look like such an ostentatious car that you constantly worry about someone trying to steal it. It hovers in a sweet spot somewhere between an all-out racer and a sophisticated coupe.

The DB9 offers sports car performance, but it also gives you plenty of comfort and entertainment, something that most sports cars lack. The hand-made car features a precise interior with leather upholstery and wood trim. A milled-aluminum instrument panel stands out as one of the car's most beautiful features. Since Aston Martin customizes the car, you can choose from numerous color combinations.

The 2007 Aston Martin DB9 includes the kind of features buyers expect to find in a high-end luxury car. Its 10-way power seats and automatic climate control keep passengers comfortable (unfortunately, the rear seat feels pretty cramped). It also comes standard with a navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a Linn audio system that boasts 128 watts of power.

Optional features include a 950-watt Dolby Pro Logic II stereo system.

Performance & Handling

Let's not mince words: the 2007 Aston Martin DB9 has an awesomely powerful engine. Its 5.9-liter V-12 offers a whopping 450 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. If those numbers don’t impress you, then you need to join a racing team.

Aston Martin estimates that the DB9 coupe can go from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The Volante hits 60 mph in 4.9 seconds.

Many cars that rely on high-caliber engines don't offer terrific handling at low speeds. The 2007 Aston Martin DB9 marks a notable exception. It offers a responsive, smooth ride, even in city traffic. The coupe handles a little better on rough roads than the Volante, but why would you take this high-performance vehicle anywhere but smooth roads to let the engine hit its stride?

If you really want a thrilling ride from the DB9, opt to add the Sports Pack. It gives you sharper steering, better control over bumps, and a smoother ride that lets you know you're sitting in an awesome GT.

The 2007 Aston Martin DB9 comes loaded with safety features. Anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist, stability control, traction control, front-seat airbags, a tire-pressure monitor, and rear parking sensors all come standard. The Volante incorporates roll hoops that automatically deploy whenever a rollover occurs. You can also add front parking sensors to both versions of the DB9; it won't cost you a thing.
