Aston Martin Through The Years
Their first car was to be produced in 1915, but World War I postponed production. Both Martin and Bamford joined the military and their machinery was sold to an aviation firm.
After the war ended, Martin and Bamford reopened Aston Martin. By the 1920s, Aston Martin began to gain popularity as a racing car manufacturer, although it declared bankruptcy several times during the next decade. Aston Martin models competed internationally in races, including the French Grand Prix and the epic Le Mans. By the 1930s, despite having seen several new owners come and go, Aston Martin was still a popular brand. The sleek 1934 Ulster was a particularly popular car.
Following World War II, several new models were launched. The DB1, DB2, and DB3 were named after the company's new owner, industrialist Sir David Brown, who bought Aston Martin in 1947. Then in the 1950s, Aston Martin experienced even more racing success in the DB2 at Le Mans. Another new model, the DB4, was launched and took several racing titles: the RAC Tourist Trophy, the Nürburgring, and the World Sportscar Championships.
In the 1960s, a very famous motorist started driving the new Aston Martin DB5: Sean Connery as James Bond. The car made its Bond debut in Goldfinger in 1964. By the end of the decade, Aston Martin's first four-seat car was produced, the DB6. Despite the increasing fame of the brand, the company continued to be plagued with financial problems, again going bankrupt and changing hands several times.
Aston Martin in America
After one of its several periods of bankruptcy, North Americans Peter Sprague and George Minden bought Aston Martin in 1975. Then, in 1987, the Ford Motor Company purchased Aston Martin. Ford's efforts to redevelop Aston Martin led to a series of successes that started with the debut of the very popular DB7 in the 1990s, and continued into the new millennium with the V12 Vanquish, the DB9 and the V8 Vanquish. Ford eventually sold Aston Martin to a group led by Prodrive chairman David Richards in 2007. Prodrive was not financially involved, but the group included Aston Martin collector John Sinders and two Kuwaiti investment companies (Investment Dar and Adeem Investment Co.) Today, Aston Martin is a well-respected prestige brand throughout the United States, as well as the rest of the world.
Aston Martin Models
Today's Aston Martin models make up a small line of highly desirable and extremely well-regarded cars. The current models are the V8 Vantage, the V8 Vantage Roadster, and the V12 Vantage; the Aston Martin DB9 and the DB9 Volante; the Aston Martin DBS V12 and Volante; the Rapide sedan; the Toyota iQ-based Cygnet; and the Virage.
Other models from the past decade include the Aston Martin V8 Coupe, the Aston Martin DB7 Zagato, the Aston Martin DB AR1, the Aston Martin One-77, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage N400, the Aston Martin V12 Vantage Carbon Black Edition and the Aston Martin DBS Carbon Black Edition.
Aston Martin expanded internationally over time. The four-door Aston Martin Rapide is manufactured in Graz, Austria, in the Magna Steyr factory. Design and engineering, however, still take place in the United Kingdom.
