2006 Audi A3 Review

A practical hatchback that gets the job done.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2006 Audi A3 is a practical hatchback that gets the job done. It handles nicely and has great stability features ensuring that it will perform well when loaded or on a regular day when carrying passengers and not cargo.

The Range

Body Styles: hatchback
Engines: 2.0-liter I4, 3.2-liter V-6
Transmissions: six-speed manual, six-speed automatic
Models: Audi A3 2.0T, Audi A3 2.0T DSG, Audi A3 3.2 DSG

What's New

The 2006 Audi A3 has been designed with safety and performance features, yet comes with the body of a hatchback. It therefore includes luxury features, such as leather upholstery. That said, it does not go overboard on the luxury and still maintains its place as a fairly practical vehicle with a no nonsense approach to cargo and safety.

The 2006 Audi A3 hatchback exterior looks impressive with the practicality that comes with a hatchback. It measures 69.5 inches wide, 56 inches tall, 168.7 inches long, and rising up with 4.4 inches of ground clearance. With all seats in place it sports 55.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity, sitting on a 101.5-inch wheelbase, and running on 225-45R Y all-season tires fitted on 17-inch alloy wheels. It comes with variable intermittent wipers, a rear window defogger, and a rear window wiper.

The 2006 Audi A3 interior feels roomy for a hatchback, which makes it a practical vehicle to carry out errands with 38.1 inches of headroom, 41.2 inches of legroom, and 54.3 inches of shoulder room in the front. It has bucket front seats and height-adjustable driver and front passenger seats. It comes with split-folding seats in the back so cargo room can stretch to accommodate more with the seats collapsed.

2006 Audi A3 power operated features include the speed proportional tilt power steering with cruise control and audio controls mounted on it, remote power door locks, power mirrors, and power windows. It also comes with plenty of storage space, such as the front and rear door pockets, the front and rear cup holders, the front console with storage, and the front seat back pockets on all trims.

Audi A3 aesthetics have not been ignored, and the vehicle comes with an alloy trim on the doors and dashboard, with a splattering of leather on the gear shift. It includes air-conditioning and vanity mirrors, with the dashboard sporting several performance signals, such as a low tire pressure signal, low fuel level signal, and door-ajar and ignition-on signals. For entertainment, the 2006 Audi A3 features an AM/FM stereo system with a single CD player. The sound system supports 10 internal speakers.

Performance & Handling

The 2006 Audi A3 comes in three trims. The front-drive Audi A3 2.0T uses a six-speed manual transmission. The front-drive Audi A3 2.0T DSG uses a six-speed manual transmission as well, and both employ a two-liter, I4 engine that produces 200 hp at 5100 rpm and 207 lb-ft of torque at 1800 rpm. The DOHC engine has 16 valves. The Audi A3 3.2 DSG uses a six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, running on the 3.2-liter, V-6 engine, which produces 250 hp.

2006 Audi A3 safety features include a four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS), multi-link front and rear suspension, emergency braking assist, front and rear solid disc brakes, stability and traction control systems, electronic brake force distribution, and four-wheel independent suspension on all the trims.

Additional safety features include front and rear head airbags with side-mounted airbags for side-impact protection. It also comes fitted with two front height-adjustable headrests and three rear height-adjustable headrests; all headrests protect against whiplash or neck injuries in the event of a collision. All 2006 Audi A3s come with child seat anchors fitted in the rear seat, and the rear doors have a child safety lock system. For day to day safety, the 2006 Audi A3 comes with a remote anti-theft alarm system.
