2013 Audi A3 Review

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2013 Audi A3 is a sporty and luxurious four-door hatchback with sleek German design and exhilarating performance. Its compact size and high-end suspension make for a smooth and zippy ride. Despite its power, the A3’s aerodynamic curves and efficient engine enable it to still attain exceptional fuel economy. All-wheel drive is available as an option, which improves traction in rain and snow. Overall, the 2013 Audi A3 is a versatile, luxurious, feature-packed car with sharp looks and unexpected speed and acceleration.

New For 2013

The Audi A3 remains unchanged from the previous year’s model. However, 2013 is the final year the four-door hatchback model will be available in the United States, offering a complete redesign the following year as a sedan.

Available in two trims, Premium and Premium Plus, the 2013 Audi A3 wagon offers a host of solid standard exterior features, including 17-inch alloy wheels, fog lights for enhanced safety, LED running lights, xenon headlights for greater visibility on the road, and a rear spoiler. Several packages are available, such as the Sport package, which includes 18-inch wheels and summer tires. A panoramic sunroof and black or aluminum roof rails are also available as options.

Interior & Cargo

With a classy interior with an understated design, the Audi A3 comes equipped with a host of great standard features. The materials used for the interior are generally high quality, including simulated alloy trim on the center console, dash, and doors. Dual-zone automatic climate control comes standard on the A3, as well as leather seating, a tilt and telescopic steering wheel, a CD audio system with 10 speakers, an auxiliary audio jack, and satellite radio. Comfort features found on the A3 include front and rear floor mats, a sun sensor, a cargo light, front reading lights, and dual vanity mirrors. Remote power door locks, one-touch power windows, and power mirrors come standard. Also standard are cruise control, front console with storage, front door pockets, and electric speed-proportional power steering.

The Premium Plus package adds several more standard features, such as Bluetooth technology, aluminum interior trim, better interior lighting, and steering wheel shift paddles. A Cold Weather package is available for both trims and it features heated front seats, heated mirrors, and heated windshield washer nozzles. Other packages include the Audi Navigation System Plus package, which offers a navigation system, CD changer or iPod interface, and a dash-mounted Multi Media Interface.

Sporting leather bucket seats, the 2013 Audi A3 is a comfortable ride. The front seats, however, can be difficult for shorter passengers reaching close enough to the steering wheel, while the back seats can be uncomfortable for taller passengers. Cargo space is good with 20 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. The seats can also be folded down partially, allowing for up to 39 cubic feet of space.

Full-length side curtain airbags and front seat side airbags come standard on the 2013 Audi A3. Rear seat side airbags are optional. Whiplash-reducing front headrests, stability control, and anti-lock brake systems (ABS) are standard features as well. Other safety features for the A3 include traction control, fog lights, child seat anchors, daytime running lights, a rear, center three-point belt, turn signal mirrors, rear door child safety locks, an engine immobilizer, emergency braking assist, and a remote anti-theft alarm system. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the A3 the best rating of ""good"" in the frontal-offset, side, and roof strength tests.

Driving Experience

Equipped with a standard turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine, the Audi A3 produces 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. Six-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, though a six-speed dual-clutch and automated manual transmission is available as well. This engine enables the vehicle to go from zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. Fuel economy gets 21/30 mpg city/highway and a combined total of 24 mpg.

The 2013 Audi A3 TDI features a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, diesel engine producing 140 horsepower with 236 lb-ft of torque. Reaching 60 mph in 8.9 seconds, fuel economy for the diesel version is excellent, getting 30/42 mpg city/highway, with a combined total of 34 mpg.

Equipped with either engine, the Audi A3 has decent power and smooth acceleration. Uphill climbs can put a strain on the vehicle, however, with the diesel engine. Enhancing driving performance, the A3 features a MacPherson strut front suspension, multi-link rear suspension, four-wheel independent suspension, and front and rear stabilizer bars.
