For 2009 Audi has updated the A4 sedan and Avant wagon, making them longer and wider while improving interior features.
Much of the design cues for the A4, including the front and rear fascia and aggressive front valiance, are carried over from the A5 coupe with which the A4 shares its underpinnings. A highlight of the redesign is the aggressive LED daytime running lights- a feature borrowed from Audi's R8 supercar.
Audi has long stuck with the turbocharged inline-4 as the base powerplant and the '09 A4 is no different. A 2.0-liter direct injected mill produces 211 horsepower and 258 pound feet of torque. Our test model came with the up-rated direct-injected 3.2-liter V6, putting out 265 horsepower and 243 pound feet of torque.
Power is sent to the front wheels through a continuously variable transmission, or CVT. Selecting Audi's sure-footed Quattro all wheel drive, will swap the CVT for a 6-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.
Fuel economy for the A4 ranges from 17 miles per gallon city to 26 miles per gallon highway.
The A4's more spacious interior also delivers upgraded design ergonomics. The headliner for the instrument panel flows seamlessly into the display for the optional Navigation and backup camera display. This easy to operate center console control can access everything from radio stations to driving dynamics, including Audi drive select, a push-button system that allows the driver to choose between comfort, dynamic, and auto settings. Switching creates a noticeable, dramatic change in throttle response, transmission shift points, the electronically controlled shock damping, power-steering boost and steering ratio.
Other interior highlights are the multifunction steering wheel, push button start, and power sunroof.
Standard Safety features on the A4 include 4-wheel antilock brakes, electronic stability program and reinforced bumpers and crossmembers that protect occupants.
Base MSRP for the 2009 Audi A4 is $30,700. A fully loaded A4 Avant wagon can cost about $54,000. The A4 is backed by a 4-year, 50,000-mile powertrain warranty.
With updated styling and a winning formula that combines performance, styling and comfort, Audi is bringing it's A-Game with the 2009 A4.
