Overview

Audi's best-selling sedan model, the current B9 generation A4 debuted for the 2017 model year. The compact luxury sedan features forced-induction engines, plenty of digital real estate, and, on most trims, Quattro AWD. It's also available in Allroad form, which transforms the A4 into a high-riding wagon.

The 2020 model year brought numerous changes to the A4, including revised exterior styling and interior appointments, standard LED headlights and taillights, and a new infotainment system, which operates on an enlarged touchscreen.

What We Think

With the right equipment selected, the Audi A4 is a surprisingly capable performer, and a lot of car for the money.

The A4 advanced to the finalist round in our 2017 Car of the Year evaluations, where it performed admirably in some areas and disappointingly in others. Highlights included the chassis and handling, spacious rear seat and trunk, and technology—namely the optional digital instrument cluster. Letdowns included interior material selections, and the regressive design. Although the A4's exterior has been revised for 2020, it still appears similar to earlier iterations.

A few months later, the A4 finished second in a comparison between eight compact luxury sedans. Despite not being the most powerful vehicle there, it was the quickest-accelerating and also the best around the figure-eight course. Although its performance numbers were strong, they came without much personality, which the test-winning Alfa Romeo Giulia provided much more of. Nonetheless the Audi seemed to be the best value of the group. Although its purchase price was on the higher end, it offered more features and better overall quality than its competitors.

Soon after that, an A4 joined our long-term test fleet. Again we were impressed by its acceleration, largely enabled by its quick-shifting dual-clutch transmission. As good as that transmission was once in motion, coming off the line and creeping along at low speeds revealed nonlinear responses and rough behaviors. Despite its lack of steering feel, the A4 was fun to chuck down a twisty road. Simultaneously it was a great commuter and road tripper, thanks to effective driver-assist features, which made freeway drives a breeze. Ample interior space even for our tallest editors was appreciated, too. The digital gauge cluster in our test car was an awesome party piece, as was the bumpin' 19-speaker sound system and reconfigurable ambient lighting.

A few minor issues appeared during our nearly 20,000 miles with the A4, but nothing that wasn't a straightforward fix. Ultimately, we decided the A4 is a great compact sedan, with luxury, performance, and technology galore, if still lacking in pizazz and personality. The refreshed 2020 A4 appears to maintain or enhance those factors that made our long-term car enjoyable.

Audi produces A4 variants, which alter function and performance from the standard sedan. The A4 Allroad has a wagon body that greatly increases cargo capacity, and a slight suspension lift and beefier tires that aid off-road capability. It offers similar performance, features, and technology to the sedan, though the raised ride height results in some bouncy body motions. We're wagon fans, but the A4 Allroad doesn't make much sense, considering Audi's Q5 crossover offers more cargo space and rear-seat legroom for a less-expensive starting price. Learn more about the Audi A4 Allroad here.

The legendary S4 is the sporty A4 model. With a more powerful engine, enhanced chassis, and bigger brakes, it accelerates, handles, and stops better than the regular A4. Its quad-tip exhaust system makes it sound meaner, too. Yet the A4 might be the S4's biggest problem: The regular car's impressive quickness and handling makes us wonder if the hot version is worth it. Learn more about the Audi S4 here.

Performance and Fuel Economy

Most Audi A4 models are powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-four engine joined to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, albeit with different tunes and drivetrain configurations. The basic A4 is FWD and produces 188 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. MotorTrend has not tested this A4 variant, but 0-60 mph acceleration should take a few tenths more than six seconds. EPA fuel economy for the FWD A4 is rated at 27/35 mpg city/highway.

Most A4 trim levels are equipped with Audi's renowned Quattro AWD system. Models with Quattro get a bump in engine output to 248 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Quattro-equipped models are also fitted with larger brakes than FWD variants. MotorTrend has measured 0-60 mph acceleration from AWD A4 models between 5.0 and 5.2 seconds. Fuel economy is EPA-rated at 24/32 mpg.

The A4 Allroad includes Quattro AWD and the more powerful 2.0-liter engine tune. Its modifications affect performance and fuel economy; 0-60 mph acceleration takes 5.7 seconds, and fuel economy is 23/31 mpg.

A different drivetrain motivates the S4. It's a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and sport-tuned Quattro AWD. Output measures 349 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, which improves 0-60 mph acceleration to the low-four second range. Fuel economy is reduced to 20/27 mpg as well.

Want something sleeker? Audi has an answer.

The A4 has never been an ugly car, but it's always been a bit anonymous. With the 2020 styling revisions, it continues to look neat and tidy—perhaps to a fault.

Audi's A5 solves that problem. Mechanically, it's nearly identical to the A4. Stylistically, it's far ahead. Whether in two-door coupe, soft-top convertible, or four-door Sportback body style, the A5 looks more dramatic, swoopy, and distinctive than the A4. With its big grille and creased lines, it's unmistakably an Audi.

A5 powertrain options are similar to the A4, with a turbo 2.0-liter standard and a potent V-6 under the hood of the S5. However, those with a need for speed should check out the RS 5, which includes an aggressive twin-turbo V-6 engine in its cadre of performance upgrades.

Like the A4, the A5 received a selection of style and content updates for 2020.

Safety

The Audi A4 performs well in IIHS testing, with a crashworthiness report card that only shows the top Good score on six tests. Additionally, its automatic emergency braking system earns the top Superior score in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests. Its headlights received earned a Marginal score, the second lowest. However, the new LED headlights fitted standard to 2020 A4 models might perform differently from the 2019 version tested by the IIHS. The NHTSA gives the 2020 A4 a five-star overall safety rating (out of a possible five stars).

Forward collision warning is the only standard active safety feature on entry-level models. Optional or included on higher trim levels are features like lane keep assist with corrective steering, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control.

Utility (Cargo Space and Interior Room)

The 2020 Audi A4 sedan has 12.0 cubic feet of cargo volume in its trunk. Standard 40/20/40 split folding rear seats allow for storage of larger items. In the front row, headroom measures 37.3 inches and legroom 41.3 inches. Second-row headroom lists at 37.4 inches, and legroom at 35.7 inches.

Cargo capacity is increased in the A4 Allroad, which has 24.2 cubic feet of capacity behind the second row and 58.5 cubic feet when the second row is folded down. Front-row headroom measures 37.4 inches and legroom 41.3 inches. In the second row, headroom and legroom are 37.4 inches and 35.7 inches, respectively.

Technology

For 2020, all A4 models feature a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen running Audi's latest MIB 3 user interface. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming audio, and two front-row USB ports are standard; Premium Plus and Prestige trims add two USB charge ports for the second row. Premium-trim A4s have a 7.0-inch color information display positioned in the gauge cluster, but higher-end models have Audi's Virtual Cockpit, a 12.3-inch reconfigurable display, which supplants the analogue gauge cluster. GPS navigation is optional on Premium Plus and included on Prestige models. A 10-speaker audio system is standard, and a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium arrangement is available.

Trim Levels

2020 Audi A4 Premium 40 TFSI: The entry-level Audi A4 is FWD and has the less-powerful tune of the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. It has 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome door handle trim, aluminum accents and grille bars, heated power-adjustable side mirrors, and LED headlights and taillights on the exterior. The interior has leather seating surfaces, heated and power-adjustable front seats, aluminum and brown wood trim panels, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear lever, ambient lighting elements, and a sunroof. Convenience features include three-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and keyless engine start.

2020 Audi A4 Premium 45 TFSI Quattro: In addition to AWD, 45 TFSI models have the more powerful tune of the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. These A4s are distinguished by sport-inspired front and rear fascia designs, a mesh grille insert, and 18-inch wheels. Inside, they get sport seats with lumbar adjustment for the driver and passenger, gray wood trim panels, a black headliner, and illuminated aluminum door sill inlays.

2020 Audi A4 Premium Plus 40 TFSI: FWD Premium Plus models get 18-inch gray-finished wheels, LED headlights with daytime running light accents and power-folding and auto-dimming functionality for the side mirrors. The interior gets leatherette trim on the center console and door armrests and memory settings for the driver's seat, but the digital gauge cluster display is a more noteworthy addition. Keyless entry and trunk release, side and rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors are also added.

2020 Audi A4 Premium Plus 45 TFSI Quattro: As with lower Premium trim, changes for the AWD Premium Plus trim comprise sporty exterior styling and interior appointments. Content is otherwise the same as FWD Premium Plus models.

2020 Audi A4 Prestige 40 TFSI: Model-specific touches sets Prestige trim apart. For the exterior, these include enhanced LED headlights, headlight washers, and sequentially illuminating strips in the headlights and taillights. For the interior, enhanced LED ambient lighting, a head-up display, a 19-speaker premium audio system, and dual-pane acoustic glass for the front door windows are added. Prestige models also have GPS navigation, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, automatic parallel parking, and a 360-degree view parking camera system as standard.

2020 Audi A4 Prestige 45 TFSI Quattro: Just like with lower trims, choosing AWD on Prestige trim brings performance-inspired exterior and interior styling changes and larger brakes. Content and features otherwise carry over from FWD Prestige models.
