About the Audi A4

The Audi A4 was first introduced in the U.S. in 1996 as a replacement for the Audi 90. Already a success in Europe, the Audi A4—larger and sleeker than the Audi 90—proved that it could compete with the BMW 3 Series, Acura TL Series, and Volvo 850, among others. It was equipped with a 2.8-liter V-6, 172 horsepower engine.

The Audi A4 is a high-end car that delivers style, performance, and reliability at a reasonable price. Audi has continued to strive to produce cars that add innovation improving performance and fuel economy while not forgetting that drivers want a comfortable and attractive vehicle.

Audi A4 Evolution

The Audi A4 was introduced in 1996 to replace the Audi 90. The A4 boasted a five-speed automatic transmission, paired with Quattro all-wheel drive. In 1997, Audi introduced the 1.8T model with a 120 hp, 20-valve, four-cylinder engine. The next year, the Avant station wagon was introduced.

2000 saw minor updates to the interior, exterior, and chassis, and xenon headlights were also introduced. In 2001, the 1.8T increased from 150 to 170 hp. 2002 brought the 3.0-liter, 250 hp, V-6 with it. The sedan and wagon were also both redesigned.

The Cabriolet convertible was introduced the following year and in 2004 the 1.8T models began offering manual transmissions. Audi then redesigned the A4 as a mid-year release in 2005, updating the chassis, offering different engines, and updating the style. The V-6 engine was teamed with a six-speed manual transmission in 2006, and the sport line was renamed "S line".

In 2007 the Cabriolet body style was updated and free Audi maintenance was discontinued. Minor cosmetic changes were made to the exterior the following year and 2009 saw a redesign to the wagon. The Cabriolet convertible and V-6 engine were soon after discontinued, in 2010.

The 2011 Audi A4 offered a sedan and a wagon. An eight-speed automatic transmission was also introduced.

Modern Audi A4s

The 2012 Audi A4 is a sedan of distinction. Stylish contours coupled with an aesthetically pleasing grill and lights belie the fact that the Audi A4 is an entry-level luxury car. The xenon plus headlights and LED daytime running lights look like they belong in a high-priced car. The Audi A4 2.0T's standard 17-inch alloy wheels look classy but if you want more, you can choose the optional 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels in one of the other models.

Audi offers three different models of the A4: the 2.0T Premium, the 2.0T Premium Plus, and the 2.0 Prestige. All three offer the 2.0 TFSI engine; the models differ in options for the suspension and interior of the vehicles. There were no significant changes from the 2011 model.

The Audi A4's 2.0 TFSI gasoline engine provides 211 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The fuel-injection system provides an increase in power and efficiency. The engine has been installed in more than 1.3 million Audis worldwide and has received numerous awards over the past 10 years.

The 2.0T Premium offers 17-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels; all-season tires; halogen headlights with daytime running lights; power front seats; and an optional sunroof. High-quality leather wraps the steering wheel and seats. Stereo controls are embedded on the steering wheel for easy access. The stereo offers 180 watts, AM/FM, CD, and Sirius satellite radio. A light sensor on the dashboard automatically adjusts the climate-control system on sunny days.

The 2.0T Premium Plus has 18-inch, 10-spoke alloy wheels; all-season tires; xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights; optional leather-wrapped steering wheel that has Paddle-shift controls (by ordering the Sport Package), and stereo controls on the wheel for easy access. Bluetooth capability is included in this model. A power driver's seat is standard and it includes Driver Memory where the touch of a button restores the position of the driver's seat and exterior mirrors to each individual's needs.

The 2.0T Prestige is a top-of-the-line model, offering features that are often only found in vehicles considered to be high-end luxury models. Among the amenities in the 2.0T Prestige are adaptive xenon headlights, LED daytime-running lights, and a Bang & Olufsen stereo system that offers 14 speakers and 505 digitally amplified watts. Audi MMI Navigation Plus provides a 7-inch, full-color LCD screen. Audi Side Assist helps detect items in your blind spot when your speed exceeds 19 mph. Rear acoustic parking sensors help you avoid minor accidents when parking.

Standard in all models is five-link front suspension with upper and lower control arms and a stabilizer bar, as well as independent trapezoidal-link rear suspension with a rigid sub frame, stabilizer bar, and individual gas-charged coil springs and shock absorbers.

The exterior of the Audi A4 is made of a galvanized steel unibody with anti-corrosion protection. The appearance of the Audi A4 is both opulent and functional. The Audi A4 also offers Audi Quattro, permanent all-wheel drive, as an option on all three models. A driver who wants luxury as well as safety, performance, and value should consider the Audi A4.
