About the Audi A5

The Audi A5 is perhaps best known in automotive circles as Audi’s return to compact vehicles. For most consumers, however, the Audi A5 is known for its sporty look, powerful engine, and impressive handling. It is a true luxury sports car, offering a smooth and comfortable ride along with plenty of quick-off-the-line speed.

The Audi A5 is offered in a five-door hatchback, two-door coupe, or two-door convertible, and is a version of the B8 Audi A4 models. Both the A4 and the A5 replaced the Audi 80 and Audi 90 models along with other related models in that category.

The A5 is based on the MLP platform, which is the same platform planned to support future A6 and A8 models. The platform represents a departure from Audi’s previous platforms, as it places the powertrain behind the front axle in order to achieve better weight redistribution. The first A5 boasted a 3.2-liter FSI V-6 engine. Early models in the United States were available in six-speed manual transmission or six-speed “Tiptronic” automatic transmission.

Though the A5 is still in its first generation, Audi has produced a number of different body styles, with different A5s often being released simultaneously or within the same year. The A5 Coupe 8T3 is a basic two-door model featuring a manual or automatic six-speed transmission. The A5 Cabriolet or convertible, was released in 2009, is available as a convertible. It boasts a three-liter TFSI V-6 supercharged engine. The coupe sedan A5 Sportback is available in a number of different styles. The Aluminum A5 Coupe made its debut in 2009, showcasing the prototype aluminum Audi Space Frame. Also closely related to the A5 are versions of the Audi S5 sedan that include popular sellers like the A5 coupe and convertible.
