2006 Audi A6 Review

For a lot less cash, you still get a luxury vehicle.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2006 Audi A6 serves as a luxurious vehicle though the price tag on it does not usually compete well with similar models. However, it gives the power of a 3.1-liter or 4.2-liter engine and handles speed with comfort and maneuverability in tandem with other vehicles of this class.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, wagon
Engines: 3.1-liter V-6, 4.2-liter V-8
Transmissions: Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), six-speed Tiptronic
Models: Audi A6 3.2 (CVT), Audi A6 3.2 (automatic), Audi A6 4.2 (Tiptronic)

What's New

The 2006 Audi A6 comes with an additional front-drive, 3.2-liter sedan and adds a steering wheel with controls mounted on it. Audi also adds several exterior colors to the line with the stunning bright red and the metallic grey options for some trims. Certainly, as in most upgrades of a subsequent year, the suspension system shows a tweak to give it better reliability and drive control, and the engine emits more drive power.

Exterior

The 2006 Audi A6 stands tall for a sedan vehicle and measures 193.5 inches in length, 79.2 inches wide, and 57.5 inches tall, with a ground clearance of 4.6 inches. It sits on a 111.9-inch wheelbase, driven with rack-and-pinion steering, and runs on 225-55R16 tires on the Audi A6 3.2 (CVT) and 245-45R17 tires on both the Audi A6 3.2 automatic and the Audi A6 4.2. All the three trim tires come fitted on five-spoke alloy wheels.

2006 Audi A6 fog lights remain standard on all three trims, with heated external driving mirrors and a defogger on the rear window; though the rear wiper remains an optional feature on the Audi A6 3.2 CVT and on the Audi A6 4.2, which also has the wagon body fitted with the rear wiper. All the trims come with power windows and power steering, and the three trims offer a reverse sensing system.

Interior

The 2006 Audi A6 offers good interior space, but it varies by trim. The Audi A6 3.2 CVT and automatic provide 38.7 inches of headroom, 41.3 inches of legroom, and 57.1 inches of shoulder room in the front, while they offer 37.8 inches of headroom, 36.9 inches of legroom, and 55.9 inches of shoulder room in the rear.

The Audi A6 4.2 has slightly longer dimensions with 37.5 inches of headroom, 41.3 inches of legroom, and 57.1 inches of shoulder room in the front, and 37.8 inches of headroom, 36.9 inches of legroom, and 55.9 inches of shoulder room in the rear. All 2006 Audi A6 trims come with tilt power steering, a leather steering wheel, cruise control mounted on the steering wheel, a trip computer, and low tire pressure warning.

Air-conditioning comes as a standard feature, while the sunroof option is only available for the Audi A6 3.2 automatic and Audi A6 4.2. For comfort and convenience features the Audi A6 comes with cup holders both in the front and in the rear, and for entertainment all trims comes fitted with speakers; 10 for the Audi A6 CVT and automatic trims and 13 for the Audi A6 4.2. All trims offer a standard AM/FM radio with a CD player.

Performance & Handling

The 2006 Audi A6 3.2 (CVT) and the Audi A6 3.2 (automatic) both contain a 3.1-liter, V-6, 24-valve, 255-hp engine that produces 243 lb-ft of torque, with a CVT and an automatic transmission option. The Audi A6 4.2 uses all-wheel drive, with a 4.2-liter, V-8, 40-valve, 335-hp engine that produces 335 lb-ft of torque.

Safety

For safety, the 2006 Audi A6 comes with independent front and rear suspension, traction and stability controls, a four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS), multi-link suspension in the front and the rear, front and rear anti-roll bars, gas-pressurized shocks in the front and in the rear, and coil springs in the front and rear.

Additional 2006 Audi A6 safety features include keyless entry on all three trims, child safety locks on rear doors, and an anti-theft ignition system. The three 2006 Audi A6 trims come with driver and front-passenger airbags, mounted side airbags to protect occupants in side-impact collisions, and adjustable headrests. However, the airbags in the second row remain an optional feature for all three trims.
