The Audi A7 wasn't the first coupe-like four-door, but it's one of the best. This sleek hatchback debuted in 2010, and the current second-generation A7 went on sale for the 2019 model year. It's just as luxurious as Audi's large sedans, but it has a generous cargo area that improves its everyday versatility. Quick, high-tech, and superbly built, the A7 is a segment leader.

Coupe-like four-doors might always be a point of contention. But if you can accept that they're a thing, the Audi A7 is one of the best.
Like the mechanically similar A6 sedan, the A7 advanced to the finalist round of our 2019 Car of the Year competition. The cabins in both vehicles are exceptional, setting benchmarks for design and quality. However, the A7 is differentiated by a spacious cargo area under its sloping fastback rear end. A tradeoff of the increased capacity is a booming caused by certain impacts, which can disturb the otherwise quiet ride.
Power delivery from the hybridized V-6 is ample, if sometimes overeager. The available rear-wheel steering is a must-have. All told, the A7 drives very well but feels a little too soft to be called sporty.
That's solved in the RS 7 thanks to its twin-turbo V-8, stiffer suspension, and aggressive tuning. It strikes a balance between comfort and performance—and, compared to other swoopy four-door supercoupes, it's actually a good value.
Combining good looks, daily usability, and nice driving manners, the Audi A7 is perfect for someone seeking the A6's excellence in a more alluring design.
All 2021 A7 models include Audi's Quattro AWD system. The standard engine is a turbocharged and hybridized 3.0-liter V-6 producing 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. It's connected to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. In MotorTrend testing, this engine provided a 4.9-second 0-60 mph acceleration time. EPA-rated fuel economy is 22/29 mpg city/highway.
The S7 receives a twin-turbo hybridized 2.9-liter V-6 that cranks out 444 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. Audi (conservatively) estimates the S7's 0-60 mph acceleration at 4.5 seconds. Fuel economy is rated at 18/28 mpg.
A twin-turbo hybridized 4.0-liter V-8 is used in the RS 7. It makes a mighty 590 hp and 591 lb-ft of torque, sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Expect the RS 7's 0-60 time to fall below Audi's 3.5-second estimate.
The 2020 A7 earned exemplary marks in safety testing, and the 2021 model should fare the same. When fitted with the available LED projector headlights, it earned IIHS 2020 Top Safety Pick + designation. The 2020 A7 also got the top Good score in all crashworthiness evaluations. The LED headlights on Premium and Premium Plus trims earned an Acceptable score, the second-highest. Strangely, the headlights on range-topping Prestige trim earned a Poor score, the lowest. All A7 models received the highest Superior score in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian automatic emergency braking. The NHTSA has only conducted side crash testing on the A7, but it earned five stars, the highest score possible.
Automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking are included on all A7 trims. Higher-end models add adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, as well as side and rear cross-traffic alert.
Thanks to its fastback shape, the A7 has a good amount of cargo room. Its cargo area has 24.9 cubic feet of space, which increases when the 40/20/40 split-folding second row is lowered.
Front-row headroom measures 37.0 inches in the A7, just more than 36.9 inches in the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. Second-row headroom is even greater in the A7, at 37.1 inches to the CLS's 35.9 inches. There's a little less front legroom in the Audi, which has 41.3 inches against the Mercedes' 41.9. However, 37.0 inches of rear legroom in the A7 is a fair bit more than the CLS' 35.0 inches.
The A7 features a dual-touchscreen infotainment system. On Premium models, the top screen measures 8.8 inches and the lower screen 8.6 inches, but Premium Plus and Prestige trims get a 10.1-inch upper touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and built-in navigation are standard, while Premium Plus and Prestige get a 360-degree parking camera system and wireless device charger. The A7 Premium has a 7.0-inch gauge cluster display, but a 12.3-inch all-digital display is fitted on Premium Plus and Prestige. There are two USB ports in each row of seats. Premium models have a 10-speaker audio system, Premium Plus and Prestige models get a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen setup, and a 19-speaker high-end Bang & Olufsen system is optional on the A7 Prestige.
