2004 Audi A8 Review

Performs to a high standard within its class and offers a very comfortable and luxurious ride.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2004 Audi A8 serves as Audi’s flagship luxury sedan and it continues a production run that began in 1994 to replace the Audi V8. All A8s use a front-engine, front-wheel drive layout. It currently remains in its third generation.

The Audi A8 is known for its luxurious features, smooth and powerful performance, maneuverability, comfort, and space. This line traditionally comes priced comparably to the competition. The 2004 Audi A8 contains a powerful engine and a range of quality amenities, and it receives a number of upgrades for this year.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan
Engines: 4.2-liter V-8
Transmissions: six-speed automatic
Models: Audi A8 Quattro sedan

What's New

The 2004 Audi A8 gains 20 hp, upping its total output to 330 hp. The body also starts new for 2004, using aluminum from the Aluminum Center in Germany. Audi claims the body is 60 percent more rigid than its predecessor. Along with being more rigid the 2004 sheds 300 pounds. A six-speed triptronic automatic transmission replaces the previous five-speed and it reduces the amount of shifting needed with the Dynamic Shift Program. Stability increases at higher speeds with an adaptive four-setting air-spring suspension that uses continuous shock-absorber damping control, which lowers the body at high speeds and offers a more refined ride at all speeds.

While the powertrain and body receive expansive changes, the profile and exterior details remain virtually the same as previous models. An elegant but somewhat non-descript exterior looks similar to most of the sedans in its class except for the Audi logo on the grille. 2004 Audi A8s come in a range of colors.

The 2004 Audi A8 seats five comfortably with a roomy and plush interior. The driver and all passengers get plenty of legroom and headroom. The A8 features fine wood trim, offering the buyer’s choice of Amber Vavona or Beige Grained Birch. The upholstery for the seats is Valcona leather. For the power front seats Audi gives the option of massage, heating, and ventilation functionality. Four-zone climate control remains optional. Models get a high-end and crystal-clear 12-speaker Bose surround-sound system with a CD changer.

Performance & Handling

A permanent Quattro all-wheel-drive system comes standard on the 2004 Audi A8, and a number of improvements have been made to the suspension, including an adaptive four-setting air-spring unit that uses shock-absorber damping control, making for a more refined ride and giving the A8 more stability at higher speeds. The six-speed Tiptronic transmission shows a big improvement over last year’s model. It uses a Dynamic Shift Program which decreases the amount of shifting needed while also providing smoother and faster acceleration. The 2004 A8 contains a 330-hp, 4.2-liter V-8 which performs to a high standard even within its class.

The overall driving impression is one more of luxury and comfort than power, though. Even high-speed acceleration feels smooth and handling feels more like that of a smaller vehicle. Perhaps the only negative in this regard concerns the downshifting function, especially on upgraded models.

The 2004 Audi A8 incorporates 10 airbags, including front airbags, two front knee airbags, rear side-impact airbags, and side-curtain airbags. Anti-lock brakes also come standard.
