2022 Audi Q5 Sportback MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • More practical than rivals
  • More stylish than the Q5
  • Strong feature set

Cons

  • Less practical than a Q5
  • More expensive than a Q5
  • Not very exciting to drive

The 2022 Audi Q5 Sportback rolls into its second year on the market with minimal changes. It's a relatively recent addition to the growing cadre of swoopy SUV-coupes. The Sportback shares much of its hardware with Audi's best-selling Q5, but it chops down the roofline for a few extra style points. All crossovers in this genre sacrifice practicality for their silhouette, but the Q5 Sportback requires fewer compromises than competitors.

What's New

  • New black-out package
  • Carbon-fiber trim is now standard on the SQ5

What We Think

The fact that SUV-coupes don't make much sense hasn't stopped them from gaining popularity year after year. The 2022 Audi Q5 Sportback is a fairly conservative take on the genre. Driving dynamics are not the main attraction, but the Q5 Sportback is stylish, luxurious, and less expensive than rivals.

Those rivals include the BMW X4, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class Coupe, and Porsche Macan. The Q5 Sportback has more cargo capacity and rear legroom than all three. In our opinion, it looks just as good, and the customizable taillights are a nifty touch.

The cabin is packed with tech, and Audi's standard all-wheel-drive powertrain is as capable as ever. Our biggest complaint is the drive. On the regular Q5, we found that handling lacked excitement and was hindered by an overzealous stability control. The SQ5 adds to the fun factor, but it's still saddled with a sluggish transmission.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The 2022 Audi Q5 Sportback comes with two engine options.

The first, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a mild hybrid assist, is the efficiency pick. It produces 261 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque, which is strong for the class. A seven-speed automatic transmission handles shifting duties, and all-wheel drive is standard on all trims. The EPA pegs fuel economy at 23/28 mpg city/highway.

The SQ5 Sportback kicks things up a notch with a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6, which makes 349 hp and 369 lb-ft. Audi claims a 0-60 time of 4.7 seconds, and the non-Sportback SQ5 matched that time in our testing. The SQ5 gearbox gets an extra cog, but we found the eight-speed automatic slow to downshift. Fuel economy drops to 19/24 mpg city/highway.

A Matter of Taste

The continued existence of SUV-coupes has demonstrated that for many buyers, the tradeoff in practicality is worth the aesthetic benefits. We agree that the Q5 Sportback is a looker. The sleek roofline adds character to the humdrum Q5 shape.

The catch is that manufacturers charge more money for less car. In base form, a Q5 Sportback costs $4,300 more than the Q5. The difference shrinks in the upper trims, but the Sportback's value is never as strong as its conventional sibling's. In Audi's defense, the brand asks less of a premium than BMW or Mercedes-Benz, both of which charge more than $8,000 extra for the privilege of a coupe body style.

One other fact worth noting: The Sportback misses out on the Q5's optional plug-in hybrid powertrain. A plug-in Q5 costs about as much as a Q5 Sportback Premium Plus, but the former comes with 23 miles of electric range.

Safety Ratings and Features

The 2022 Q5 Sportback scored well in IIHS tests, earning a Top Safety Pick+ designation. The NHTSA hasn't tested the Sportback, but it gave the conventional Q5 five stars overall.

Safety tech is plentiful. Every Q5 Sportback comes with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane departure warning. Adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist are on the options list.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

The 2022 Q5 Sportback has less interior space than the Q5, but it stacks up well against the BMW X4.

Cargo space (behind first/second rows):

  • 2022 Q5 Sportback: 24.7/52.3 cubic feet
  • 2022 X4: 18.5/50.5 cubic feet

Legroom (first/second rows):

  • 2022 Q5 Sportback: 40.9/38.0 inches
  • 2022 X4: 40.7/35.5 inches

Technology

The Q5 Sportback comes with a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen loaded with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Premium Plus and Prestige trims get Audi's Virtual Cockpit, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that can be configured to the driver's preferences. Navigation and a head-up display are also available.

Recommended Trim

The Goldilocks trim is the Premium Plus, which adds the remaining safety features as well as the Virtual Cockpit display. It costs about as much as a base X4 or GLC Coupe. We'd stick to the 2.0-liter powertrain—the SQ5 isn't as fun as a Porsche Macan.
