Entry-level luxury meets high performance in the Audi S3. This little rascal is the mid-range offering of Audi's subcompact luxury sedan, sportier than the standard A3 but not as wild as the RS3 still to come. Last refreshed for 2017, the S3 has been fully redesigned for the 2022 model year.

What We Think

The 2022 S3's performance figures and thoroughly upscaled underpinnings make us think Audi is on track to make this sport sedan the best it's ever been.

The A3's shell provides an appealing starting point. Exterior styling is more complex and mature than before, while the interior appears to gain luxury, quality, and features. Now, there's more that makes it an Audi than the badge on its grille.

But in the S3, it's what's behind that grille that matters. The pumped-up turbocharged engine makes more power than before—not that we ever thought the last S3 was too slow. Hopefully the new chassis and suspension setup will improve the prior model's somewhat numb handling.

Regardless, we liked the S3 before, and we can't imagine the new 2022 model will be any less enjoyable.

How Quick Is the Audi S3?

Like the previous S3, the 2022 model is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 engine, hooked up to a dual-clutch automatic transmission and Quattro AWD. Compared to the older car, however, output rises by 18 hp and 15 lb-ft, to 306 and 295, respectively. Audi says the new S3 can launch from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Considering that we got a 4.4-second time from our previous S3 long-term test car, Audi's estimate for the 2022 car seems conservative. Expect it to also beat the 13.0-second, 105.3 mph quarter-mile result our long-termer posted.

Is the Audi S3 All-Wheel Drive?

Quattro AWD is a core tenet of Audi performance, and the S3 has it as standard equipment. Sending power to all four wheels helps the car achieve speedy launches and tenacious grip. In addition to standard AWD, the S3 gains larger internally ventilated brake rotors and suspension lowered by 15 millimeters compared to the standard A3.

S3 Vs. RS3

What do you do if the S3 just isn't sporty enough? You wait for the RS3. The letters RS—Renn Sport, or Racing Sport in German—designate Audi's highest-performance models, as they have on its smallest car in the past and will again in the future. We expect the next-gen RS3 to pack a turbocharged five-cylinder engine cranking out upwards of 400 hp. Quattro AWD is a certainty, likely aided by a trick differential shuffling power between the four corners. That hardware should unlock a 0-60 mph launch in the mid-three-second range, with available carbon-ceramic brakes offered to keep speeds in check. The future RS3 should look the part, too, thanks to signature RS design details such as punched-out fender flares and big-bore oval exhaust tips.

All S3 trims are equipped with a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A digital gauge display is standard, measuring 10.3 inches or 12.3 inches depending on trim; either contains an S3-specific performance information readout. A semi-autonomous parking system is optional on the A3, but standard on the S3. Premium technology features should include a head-up display, wireless charging pad, and upgraded audio system.

Safety Ratings and Features

The 2022 S3 includes driver-assist and active safety features including automatic high beams, lane departure warning, and front automatic emergency braking. Adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are optional or included depending on trim. Ten airbags are placed throughout the cabin.

Strong crash test results by other current Audis indicate good safety performance from the S3 and A3. The safest cars and luxury SUVs for 2021 include Audi models.
