2002 Audi S4 Review

All season, all climates sports-tuned sedan or wagon that provides a stable, confident ride.

Reviewed by Automotive on

The 2002 Audi S4 is the high performance version of the Audi A4, and just as the Audi A4, it comes in a sedan and a wagon body style. From the outside, the 2002 Audi S4 Quattro and S4 Avant Quattro look just like their Audi A4 counterparts, but that is where the similarities end. Differences between the two models include the engine, brakes, suspension, and many other features that are included with the Audi S4 models that are not found in the Audi A4 as standard.

The Range

Body Styles: four-door sedan, five-door wagon
Engines: 2.7-liter V-6
Transmissions: six-speed manual, five-speed automatic Tiptronic
Models: Audi S4 Quattro, Audi S4 Avant Quattro

What's New

As a new generation of the Audi S4 is due to launch for the 2003 model year, the 2002 Audi S4 has remained unchanged for its debut.

There are subtle differences between the Audi A4 models and the two 2002 Audi S4 cars. Both the 2002 Audi S4 Quattro and Avant Quattro are fitted with 17-inch wheels that are unique to the S4. Audi has created S4 badging to differentiate between the two. On the front of the Audi S4 cars, there is a larger air intake opening compared to that found on the A4, and lastly, the Avant version is equipped with aluminum finish roof rails.

As with the interior of all vehicles produced by Audi, the interior of the 2002 Audi S4 is one of quality, luxury, and comfort. Leather upholstery and wood trim adorn the interior. With the Sport package, the seat upholstery also includes suede inserts in contrasting colors and the wood trim is replaced with silver aluminum trim. Power seats are standard, and the seats are bolstered for maximum comfort. A six CD changer and navigation system are available, and options include heated seats, a sunroof, and a hands free cellular link.

There is plenty of room for passengers and cargo in both the sedan and wagon styles of the 2002 Audi S4, although three adults will find it cramped in the rear. While both models are touted as five-passenger vehicles, only four adults can be seated comfortably. The trunk of the 2002 Audi S4 Quattro sedan is a good size, but for those wanting more space, the Avant should be their choice. The cargo space in the rear can be increased in the Avant when the rear seats are folded flat, providing a cargo area to rival some SUVs. The wagon version of the 2002 Audi S4 also comes with a retractable luggage cover and dividing cargo net to make the most of the cargo space in the rear.

Performance & Handling

Both styles of the 2002 Audi S4 are equipped with a 2.7-liter twin turbocharged V-6 engine that produces 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard for both versions of the 2002 Audi S4, but a five-speed automatic Tiptronic transmission is optional. The engine has been tuned by Audi to provide most of its power at lower torque values making it a spirited and dynamic car to drive, particularly with the six-speed manual transmission.

The Quattro all-wheel drive system is standard for the 2002 Audi S4 sedan and wagon. This system continuously monitors the grip of the each of the four tires, and adjusts power amongst the tires to ensure the maximum adhesion and traction.

As well as tuning the engine, the 2002 Audi S4 has a sports-tuned suspension and upgraded brakes and shocks. While the ride is firmer than the Audi A4, the precise steering and handling of the sedan and wagon make up for the slightly less smooth ride.

Standard safety equipment for the 2002 Audi S4 Quattro and the 2002 Audi S4 Avant Quattro includes anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and electronic differential lock, an electronic stability control system, a traction control system, and dual front and side airbags. Anti-roll bars are fitted to the front and the rear of both models of the 2002 Audi S4.
