The Audi S4 is a high performance version of Audi’s A4 line. This is true for all of the alpha-numerical nameplates; the ""S"" versions are higher-performance models of the ""A"" versions. The Audi S4 began production in 1991 and is still part of the Audi lineup. Classifications for this vehicle have included compact executive car, sport compact, wagon, and sport sedan. It has a longitudinal front-engine four-wheel-drive layout. Models collectively feature a more powerful internal combustion engine, larger and more powerful brakes, a firmer suspension, larger performance-oriented wheels, and a handful of styling modifications on some models.
Body Styles: sedan, wagon, convertible
Engines: 4.2-liter V-8
Transmissions: six-speed manual, six-speed automatic
Models: Audi S4 Quattro
The wagon version rejoins the S4 lineup for 2004, which is also the first time a V-8 engine is used within this segment.
The Audi S4's exterior is similar to the A4, but with a few upgrades like xenon-high-intensity headlights standard with a titanium-color housing, large front air intakes, spoiler, aluminum mirrors, and 18-inch cast-alloy wheels.
The S4 can seat up to five people with front bucket seats and a rear 60/40-split folding bench seat. It features leather trim and a grey instrument panel. Some features include 12-way power adjustable front seats, automatic climate control with a sun sensor, upgraded 10-speaker audio system with six-CD changer, remote keyless entry, satellite radio, optional navigation, optional hands-free digital phone, and a further upgraded sound system.
Performance & Handling
The 4.2-liter V-8 had to be modified to fit into the S4 because it is generally used on larger vehicles. It can produces 340-hp at 7000 rpm and 302 lb-ft of torque at 3500 rpm. With the manual gearbox it has been clocked at zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. The six-speed tiptronic automatic is also available. Overall, the 2004 Audi S4 displays exceptional performance and handling.
2004 Audi S4 safety features include anti-lock brakes, Electronic Differential Locks for the front and rear, and rear-brake pressure regulation to help the driver keep control in emergency situations. Airbags similar to side curtain airbags deploy from above the side windows in case of an accident and stay inflated an extended five seconds in case of rollover. Side-impact airbags are standard in the front and optional in the back. The front seat belts are height adjustable and have load limiters, and LATCH child-safety seat tethers can be installed.
