2007 Audi S4 Review

A lightweight vehicle with a powerful engine and all-wheel drive.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The 2007 Audi S4 packs a punch with its 4.2-liter V-8. The engine delivers power to all four wheels through either a six-speed manual or Tiptronic automatic. This offers plenty of power and speed for a lightweight vehicle like the S4. The 2007 S4 comes as a sedan, wagon, or convertible, so consumers can choose the body that matches their lifestyle best. This is a well-built machine that offers power, safety, and a smooth ride.

The Range

Body Styles: sedan, wagon, convertible
Engines: 4.2-liter V-8
Transmissions: six-speed manual, six-speed Tiptronic automatic
Models: Quattro, Avant Quattro, Cabriolet

What's New

For 2007, the Audi S4 line is joined by a Cabriolet version. The sedan and wagon versions now come with a sunroof, black brake calipers, and an audio system that can play MP3-encoded CDs. Audi discontinued its free maintenance program for 2007. The 2007 Audi S4's only satellite radio option comes from Sirius.

Exterior

The 2007 Audi S4 comes in three body styles. The Avant Quattro wagon and Quattro sedan are attractive, but drivers shouldn't expect Audi to make an outrageous body that depends on a lot of flash. The automaker likes to stick to classic designs, and that's what consumers get from the S4: a classic, luxurious look that won't attract unwanted attention, but still looks terrific.

Interior

The 2007 Audi S4's well-crafted interior is a staple for the Audi brand. The specific interior features vary depending on the trim level chosen. No matter which one is picked, drivers get an elegant interior of brushed aluminum trim and finely-made instrument facings. The 2007 Audi S4 Quattro sedan and Avant Quattro wagon come standard with an impressive number of features. Twelve-way power Recaro seats with Silk Napa upholstery will keep consumers comfortable, as will the dual-zone automatic climate control. The 10-speaker audio system also keeps occupants entertained during long commutes while a sunroof fills the car with natural light that makes the interior look even nicer.

The 2007 Audi S4 Cabriolet comes with the same interior features as the Quattro and Avant Quattro with just a couple exceptions. Obviously, the sunroof is gone. Audi also replaced the Recaro seats with conventional leather seats. The convertible also comes with a power-operated soft top designed to help the cabin remain quiet even with the wind whipping around. The 2007 Audi S4 offers plenty of optional features for those willing to invest a little more money. Optional features include a 215-watt Bose stereo and a navigation system.

Performance & Handling

The 2007 Audi S4 comes with a 4.2-liter V-8 that offers 240 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque. That's more than enough power to catapult this small car down the road. Thanks to its powerful engine, light weight, and all-wheel drive, the S4 can hit 60 mpg from a standstill in just 5.3 seconds. The 2007 A4's power makes it fun to drive, but it's the excellent handling that really makes it worthy of the Audi brand. It handles winding roads expertly with very little pull. It doesn't have the absolute sharpest steering in the world, but it is still among the best. Again, the all-wheel drive helps out tremendously in this area.

Safety

The 2007 Audi S4 comes standard with anti-lock disc brakes with brake assist and electronic brake force distribution, stability control, front seat-mounted side airbags, and full-length side curtain airbags. If consumers want a little more protection for passengers, they can choose to add rear side airbags. Although the 2007 Audi S4 has not been crash tested, the A4, on which the S4 is based, gets great reviews. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration gives the A4 four out of five stars in frontal crash tests. The A4 gets five stars for protecting front seat passengers in side-impact crash tests. It gets four stars for protecting passengers in the rear. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the A4 its highest rating for frontal-offset and side-impact crashes. The S4 would presumably get similar ratings.
