2009 Audi S4 Review

The 2009 Audi S4 Cabriolet is a good choice for drivers looking for high performance in a small luxury convertible. The quattro AWD provides extra traction for drivers who travel as much in inclement weather as they do with the sun at their back and the top down.

Equipped with a 4.2-liter, 340-hp, V-8 engine and a six-speed manual transmission and quattro’s full-time AWD (all-wheel-drive), it offers the performance and handling that you’d hope to find in a sport convertible.

What's New

  • For the 2009 model year, the Audi S4 is only available as a Cabriolet convertible. It remains unchanged from the 2008 model year. The sedan and wagon are temporarily discontinued.

The exterior of the 2009 Audi S4 Cabriolet has a power top that can be operated at speeds of up to 15 mph with an opening time of 21 seconds and closing time of 23.5 seconds. The top comes in three colors: black, beige, and blue. The power top also contains a heated glass rear window.

The body has large front intake vents to aid in engine cooling; aluminum accents surround the exterior mirrors.

Standard equipment includes eighteen-inch alloy wheels with performance tires, variable intermittent wipers, power cloth convertible top, rear defogger, fog lights, high pressure headlight washers, and Xenon HID (High-Intensity-Discharge) headlights.

A Convenience Package features adaptive headlights, eighteen-inch GMbH alloy wheels, rain and light sensor, universal remote transmitter, auto-dimming rearview mirror and outside mirrors, memory settings, and a Bose premium audio system.

The S4 seats four in the opulent cabin. It features quality materials and superb fit and craftsmanship. The controls are conveniently placed. The rear seat legroom is cramped, but small adults and children should find it roomy enough. The S4 Cabriolet offers 10.2 cubic feet of cargo space.

The engineers at Audi have designed the cabin to take advantage of available space in order to include all of the technological gadgets that buyers appreciate. All electronic systems are controlled.

Standard equipment includes power door locks, power windows, heated power mirrors, eight-way power driver and passenger seats with heat, power lumbar support and height adjustment, premium leather upholstery, sport front seats, cruise control, front console with storage, first aid kit, manual rear seat easy entry, electric speed-proportional power steering, leather-wrapped tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio control functions, charcoal air filter, dual-zone climate control, alloy/leather interior trim, tachometer, trip computer with Driver Information System, external temperature display, and AM/FM/6-CD changer/MP3/Satellite audio system with radio data system, pre-wired for phone, and ten speakers.

Stand-alone options include heated rear seats, a parking system, navigation system, and iPod connectivity. The Audi Navigation Plus, a DVD-based navigation system, features a full-color 6.25 LCD screen and Audi MMI-inspired control logic for the audio system. The available iPod adapter is installed in the glove compartment, as well as two SD card slots for playing MP3 music files.

Performance & Handling

The S4’s 4.2-liter V-8 engine is powerful; it can go from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds with the manual transmission. You can use the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters with the shiftable automatic transmission. Cornering is helped by the quattro AWD and the traction and stability control systems.

The suspension, a combination of four-link with upper and lower control arms, stabilizer bar and separate coil springs/shock absorbers (gas-charged) in the front, and a fully independent trapezoidal-link with stabilizer bar and separate coil springs/shock absorbers in the rear, ensures that the driver and passengers experience a smooth ride. Audi’s ESP (Electronic Stabilization Program) monitors the speed, steering angle, throttle settings and has sensors on the car suspensions linkages. This will back off the throttle or apply braking adjustments to wheels to attempt to keep the car on the road when the car is driven close to its limit.

Standard safety equipment includes side-impact airbags, head extension airbags, driver’s side knee airbag, ABS with brake assist, traction control and electronic stability system. The convertible is equipped with automatically deploying rollover hoops if a sensor detects a rollover situation.

Safety features include a mechanical center differential, center limited slip differential, front and rear multi-link four-wheel independent suspensions, front and rear stabilizer bar, four-wheel ABS (Antilock Braking System), remote anti-theft alarm system with engine immobilizer, emergency braking assist, electronic brake force distribution, front and rear ventilated disc brakes, stability control, traction control, post-collision safety system, and tire pressure monitoring.
