This iconic S4 gives sport sedan drivers plenty of everyday performance, along with the luxury and tech that Audi is known for. It's the sportiest version of Audi's best-selling sedan model, sending turbocharged power through Quattro AWD. The current B9 generation made its debut for 2017 and received a major refresh for 2020.
The "S" stands for sport, but it could also mean sleeper. The S4's styling is relatively subdued compared to other sporty compact luxury sedans, but it delivers performance to back up those telltale quad exhaust tips.
Smooth turbocharged torque flows from the V-6, providing strong acceleration. Through corners Audi's Quattro AWD system shines, giving the S4 a sense of composure and predictability. A louder exhaust could improve the sense of fun, but the S4 is speedy and sporty nonetheless.
As in the standard A4, materials and quality are excellent. Audi's latest tech, like the dazzling Virtual Cockpit digital gauge cluster, is practical and just looks cool.
In fact, that standard A4 might be the S4's biggest problem. It offers essentially the same style and luxury, without much loss in performance—the A4 is still a solid car to drive. But for enthusiasts who want a well-rounded sedan that'll still excite, the S4 remains a good choice.
The S4's turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 cranks out 349 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Joined to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the engine sends power to a sport-tuned version of Audi's Quattro AWD system. In MotorTrend testing, the S4 hit 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. EPA-rated fuel economy is 20/28 mpg city/highway.
Audi S models are quick, but RS cars are built for true performance. Although the Rennsport range expands with the arrival of the RS 6 Avant, there's a car notably missing between the subcompact RS 3 and sleek RS 5: the RS 4. Although Audi sold one in the United States previously—packing an engine derived from the R8—it doesn't now and tragically has no plans to do so. Making that fact more painful is that Audi sells the RS 4 overseas, in gorgeous wagon form, no less.
The A4 sedan on which the S4 is based earned top Good scores in all 2020 IIHS crashworthiness evaluations. The NHTSA gave the 2021 S4 a five-star rollover safety score, the highest possible rating. Meanwhile, the A4 on which it's based gets a five-star overall rating, which additionally factors four-star frontal and five-star side crash scores.
All trims are equipped with front automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning. The Premium Plus and Prestige trims add rear and side cross-traffic alerts, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and road sign recognition.
Trunk capacity measures 12.0 cubic feet, with standard 40/20/40 split-folding second-row seats to help accommodate larger items.
Front-row headroom measures 37.3 inches in the S4, which compares to 38.7 inches in the BMW M340i. Front-row legroom is 41.3 inches in the S4, a bit less than the M340i's 42.0 inches. Second-row headroom measures 37.4 inches in the Audi and 37.6 inches in the BMW. Second-row legroom is 35.7 inches in the S4, a bit more than the 35.2 inches in the M340i.
All S4 trim levels feature a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen that includes wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth streaming. Two front-row USB ports are standard. The Premium Plus and Prestige trims gain built-in navigation, a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, a 360-degree view parking camera system, and two second-row USB ports. The Prestige trim additionally features a head-up display, semi-autonomous parking system, and 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system to replace the standard 10-speaker setup on lower trims.
