Audi S4

The Audi S4 was first implemented into the Audi line in the early 1990s, and it has continued production into 2012. The redesigns and changes in the performance sedan have included the obvious changes in body style and available engine technology. This premium sport model has also served as an introduction to the Audi line for many curious test drivers.

About the Audi S4

Ultimately, the Audi S4 serves as the high-performance sport version of the popular compact sedan, the Audi A4. The S4 has evolved to evoke imagination and intrigue from drivers and automotive competitors, and throughout the years, it has continued to boast the ever-impressive quattro technology. Now in the fifth generation of production, the Audi S4 continues to sell and remains less expensive than other comparable models from competitors such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

When the Audi S4 was introduced in 1991, it was modeled after what is known as the Audi 100 saloon/sedan. In 1997, the S4 became the performance upgrade of the A4 sedan, and the design and engineering team has continued to use the A4 model as the foundation of the variable design schemes incorporated into the S4.

For more than 20 years, the Audi S4 has been known for its capable engine output and superior traction, offered by the adaptive quattro four-wheel drive technology.

Modern Audi S4s

The 2012 Audi S4 continues in the same vein as the fifth generation A4/S4 first introduced in 2008. The B8 platform (Typ 8K) quattro was an immediate head-turner for the Audi aficionado, and the 2012 S4 continues the evolution of the B8. Starting price of the Audi S4 is just over $47,000 MSRP.

The 2012 Audi S4 model presents drivers with a near-identical driving experience to that of the 2011 model, yet several of the key options that came at a cost with the 2011 model are now considered standard equipment. In terms of available options, the six-speed standard transmission comes standard on the Audi S4, but there is also a seven-speed, dual-clutch, S tronic option available. The Audi Drive Select push-button driving system is also available at an additional cost of $4,000 on the S4.

Under the Audi S4 hood, the supercharged V-6 pushes a robust 333 brake horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. Within expert hands, the 2012 S4 standard transmission ran from zero to 60 in an impressive 4.9 seconds. That is more than enough throttle response and instant velocity to sink a driver into his or her seat. Perhaps most impressive is the combination of such quickness and power from the Audi S4 combined with an estimated 18/27 mpg city/highway.

The 2012 Audi S4 Premium Plus package offers 18-inch wheels with high-performance summer tires, a 10-speaker stereo system with single CD player, satellite radio, and an additional audio jack. Other standard equipment includes an iPod interface, Bluetooth connectivity, interior climate control, heated seats with 12-way positioning—including driver memory—auto-dimming mirrors, and a 60/40 rear folding seat for access to the trunk. On the Audi S4's exterior, xenon headlamps are accompanied by long-life, daytime running headlights and taillights.

The S4 Prestige options includes 19-inch wheels, a rear-backing camera, blind spot assistance, rear-parking sensors, keyless entry and ignition, a navigation system, digital music storage, real-time traffic updates, HD Radio, and an impressive 14-speaker stereo system by Bang & Olufsen. Such options can be added to the Audi S4 Premium Plus, but additional options (such as the aforementioned Audi Drive Select) are only available through the Prestige package.

The safety features on the 2012 Audi S4 are as one would expect: standard four-wheel ABS, offered through a powerful braking system; traction control; stability control; driver and passenger airbags, and side-curtain airbags. Drivers in cities with hills will enjoy the added safety feature of hill assist/hill hold on the manual-transmission model.

Audi S4 Evolution

The first generation of the Audi S4 was offered from 1991 until 1994. The bodylines released some of the rigidity of the early Audi 100 sedan (saloon), suggesting the future direction of the S4 model.

In 1997, when the Audi S4 began to follow in the design footsteps of the A4, the Audi B5 S4 (Typ 8D) second generation platform was introduced and produced from 1997 to 2002.

The third generation of the S4 was introduced in 2003 and produced until 2005. The B6 (Typ 8E/8H) presented three body options to drivers: a saloon/sedan, an estate station wagon, and a two-door cabriolet convertible.

In late 2005, Audi pushed toward the B7 (Typ 8E/8H), an aesthetic change in the existing S4 offerings, which included a S4 25 quattro special edition saloon/sedan celebrating 25 years of the quattro four-wheel drive. Only 250 of these special cars were ever produced.
