2021 Audi S6 MODEL OVERVIEW

Pros

  • Handsome, understated exterior design
  • Excellent materials and quality
  • Powerful twin-turbo engine

Cons

  • No S6 in wagon form
  • Somewhat clumsy driver-assist systems
  • The regular A6 is still plenty quick

If you're the type of driver who wants everyone to know you got the performance model, the S6 isn't for you. Unlike some aggressive-looking, excessively badged sporty cars, Audi's sporty midsize luxury sedan wears understated styling. Only a few subtle design cues (like quad exhaust tips and silver mirror caps) indicate that this isn't just any A6. Like the car it's based on, the S6 combines luxury and technology, but it adds more performance. The current S6 debuted for 2020.

What's New

  • 21-inch wheels with summer tires become standard on all trims
  • Carbon-fiber interior trim is now the default option
  • Adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist added to the Executive Package available on the Premium Plus trim

What We Think

The standard A6 is a stunner, and it's also one of the best midsize luxury sedans available today. More power couldn't hurt, right? Enter the S6.

Although it looks relatively subdued compared to its high-performance competitors, the S6's sleeper styling hides its high-performance capabilities. Its twin-turbo V-6 promises to improve performance over the already capable engine found in the A6, dropping 0-60 acceleration into the mid-4-second range.

Just like the regular car, there's no shortage of luxury and technology features in the S6. Audi's dual-display infotainment system and digital gauge display lend a futuristic ambiance. However, we found the driver-assist systems to be a little clumsy at times. Nonetheless, materials and quality are among the best in the business.

Whatever your mood, whatever the road, the S6's performance and features are ready for it.

What Engine Does the Audi S6 Have?

The S6 is powered by a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V-6 assisted by a 48-volt mild hybrid electrical system. This setup produces 444 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, which is sent through an eight-speed automatic transmission to Audi's Quattro AWD system. Acceleration to 60 mph is estimated by Audi at 4.4 seconds. Fuel economy is rated by the EPA at 18/28 mpg city/highway.

Is There an RS 6 Sedan?

Even more powerful and high-performance than the S6 is the RS 6, which Audi has brought back to the U.S. after a long hiatus. It packs a twin-turbo V-8 good for 591 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque, sent through—what else—Audi's Quattro AWD system. Thing is, the RS 6 doesn't look quite like the S6, and not only because of its more aggressive styling. It's offered exclusively in Avant form, Audi-speak for wagon. Why? Perhaps Audi thinks it makes enough fast SUVs (there's the RS Q8, after all), so it can get a little weird with a wagon. For the time being there's no plan to offer an RS 6 sedan in the U.S. That's fine by us—the Avant provides actual practicality along with extreme performance.

Safety

Although the S6 has not been specifically tested, the A6 earned 2020 Top Safety Pick + designation from the IIHS and a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, the highest possible score.

Standard driver-assist and active safety features include front automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning. The Prestige trim has adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, road sign recognition, and front, side, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

Trunk space measures 13.7 cubic feet, and the S6 is equipped with split-folding second-row seats to allow storage of larger items.

Front-row headroom measures 38.0 inches in the S6, which compares to 38.8 inches in the BMW M550i. Front-row legroom is 41.3 inches in the S6, just less than the M550i's 41.4 inches. Second-row headroom measures 38.1 inches in the Audi, better than the 37.5 inches in the BMW. Second-row legroom is also better, at 37.4 inches to the M550i's 36.5 inches.

Technology

The S6 is equipped with a dual-touchscreen infotainment system. The upper 10.1-inch display is used for media and navigation functions; the lower 8.6-inch unit handles comfort and climate controls. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, built-in navigation, front and rear USB ports, and a wireless charging pad are standard. A 360-degree view camera system eases parking. All S6 trims have a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, and the Prestige trim adds a head-up display. A 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium audio system is standard.

Recommended Trim

The S6 in standard Premium Plus trim is plenty nice for about $75,000. But for a vehicle of this caliber, it seems worthwhile to go all out. Choosing the roughly $82,000 Prestige trim adds high-tech features like a head-up display and adaptive cruise control. Luxury is enhanced with extended interior leather trim and heated rear seats. Interior ambient lighting may be a novelty, but it's cool, nonetheless. Although the Prestige trim doesn't change the S6's performance, choosing it adds to this Audi's modern, stately appeal.
