2001 Audi S8 Review
Luxury and power combined.
Reviewed by Automotive on
The 2001 Audi S8 classifies as a sedan, and it provides the high-performance version of the Audi A8. With a bigger engine and all-wheel drive the power and handling improve from the less-endowed A8. The Audi S8 comes at a higher price than some of the other models due the inclusion of more high-tech features.
Engines: 4.2-liter V-8
Transmissions: five-speed automatic
Models: Audi S8
The Audi S8 starts new for the 2001 model year. A pumped up version of the A8, the performance of the 2001 Audi S8 outdoes the A8 with much more horsepower available. The brakes also use a more powerful design to match the increase in horsepower, and the suspension stiffens to give the 2001 Audi S8 a sportier feel. The new Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) that joins the A8 in 2001 also comes as part of the S8’s features. A multifunctional steering wheel also provides a new feature that adds quality to the S8 model.
The 18-inch wheels on the 2001 Audi S8 use alloy and a spare alloy wheel comes with new purchases. A rear defogger helps keep frost and fog off the rear window and improves rear visibility. A power glass sunroof adds extra light to the interior and allows for better air circulation, which provides a great benefit in hot weather.
The front seats feel roomy and comfortable in the 2001 Audi S8. The front-passenger and driver’s seat both have heat, which seems great in cold weather. The front passenger and driver also benefit from 14-way seat adjustment and enjoy manually adjustable lumbar support to ensure that both occupants remain comfortable. The front includes sport seats, and all the seats come upholstered in leather. The rear seats include a center armrest. Ventilation ducts for the rear passengers let them enjoy the heat and air-conditioning.
Convenience features include cruise control and speed-proportional power steering. A cargo net, front console storage, and front and rear door pockets allow for the handy storage of maps and gear. Power features include power door locks and power heated exterior mirrors. All four doors of the 2001 Audi S8 include one-touch power windows. Two 12-volt outlets remain optional in the Audi S8. It uses dual-zone climate control. Leather trim decorates the center console, the doors, and the steering wheel. Wood trim enhances the center console, the dash, and the doors. The driver’s seat can be programmed to remember the settings for four drivers and this includes the steering wheel adjustment. The stereo offers 200 watts of output, a multi-CD player in the cargo area, and high-quality Bose speakers.
Performance & Handling
The Audi S8 serves as an extremely powerful full-size sedan. It moves faster than smaller sports cars. Its 360 horsepower V-8 propels the car from zero to 60 mph in less than six seconds. The all-wheel drive helps maintain handling at all times, even around tight corners and on slippery roads.
The four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS) has front and rear ventilated disc brakes to prevent overheating. Front and rear head airbags protect everyone in the case of a front collision. Front and rear side-impact airbags provide extra protection against side collisions. Stability control, traction control, and electronic brake force distribution ensure a stable and well-balanced ride as well as prevention against sliding and loss of control.
