Power and luxury come in equal measure in the S8. Audi's flagship full-size sedan represents the brand's highest capabilities in design, technology, and performance. Over the years, Audi has used the S8 to showcase exotic powertrains and engineering techniques, making it a way for enthusiasts to glimpse into the automaker's future. The current S8 debuted for the 2020 model year.
The standard A8 is an incredible car, but it's missing one important thing: power. With 563 hp on tap, the S8 would appear to solve that problem.
Audi's super-sedan may not be as outright plush as the A8 due to its sportier suspension tune, but passengers should still be comfortable. There's abundant space to stretch out, with incredible materials and quality creating a luxurious ambiance. The level of technology is staggering; even rear-seat riders can have their own infotainment controller.
There's no denying that the S8 is a big car, so handling may remain calibrated more for high-speed cruising than backroad carving. Nonetheless, with a potent twin-turbo V-8 under the hood, achieving those high speeds should come with very little effort. Understated styling will help it fly under the radar.
Powering the S8 is a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 paired with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, producing 563 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. The engine is joined to an eight-speed automatic transmission and Audi's Quattro AWD system. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph is estimated by Audi at 3.8 seconds. EPA-rated fuel economy is 13/22 mpg city/highway.
Standard driver-assist and active safety features include front automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beams. Choosing the Executive package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and side and rear cross-traffic alert.
The S8's trunk offers 12.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Front-row headroom measures 38.3 inches, which compares to 39.9 inches in the BMW Alpina B7. Front-row legroom is 41.5 inches in the S8, just more than the 41.4 inches found in the B7. Second-row headroom is 38.5 inches in the Audi and 38.9 inches in the BMW. Both offer huge rear legroom, with 44.3 inches in the S8 and 44.4 inches in the B7.
The S8 offers Audi's latest tech. The driver looks at a 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit digital gauge cluster supplemented by a head-up display. A dual-touchscreen infotainment setup comprises a 10.1-inch upper display plus an 8.6-inch lower unit. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth streaming, and built-in navigation are included. Front USB ports and a wireless charging pad are standard, with rear USB ports available. Parking this lengthy beast is made easier by the standard 360-degree view camera system. A 17-speaker audio system is standard, which can be replaced by a 23-speaker premium setup. Choosing the Executive package adds a small remote control dedicated to second-row seat, climate, and infotainment controls.
The S8 is impressive on its own, but choosing the Executive package enhances the experience. It adds driver-assist features including adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and cross-traffic alerts. Inside, luxury is enhanced with extended leather trim, heated rear seats, and matrix LED reading lights for the rear passengers. Those passengers also get a distinct infotainment remote control and USB ports. S8 models with the Executive package get special animated taillights and laser headlights for eye-catching illumination.
