  • Great blend of luxury and sport
  • Agile handling
  • Roomy, high-quality cabin

  • Synthetic steering feel
  • Lacks standard driver aids
  • Thirsty for fuel

Sure, the Audi Q5 crossover is quick, but the SQ5 is properly sporty. The performance-tuned version of Audi's luxury compact crossover was introduced for the 2018 model year. It brings the upscale features of its standard counterpart, with an increased fun factor. For 2022, it gains carbon-fiber interior trim as standard equipment.

What We Think

At some point, every hot hatchback fan must realize that a small sporty car no longer works. Whether it's family, clients, pets, or just stuff, life gets in the way, and a larger vehicle becomes necessary. Can any provide enthusiasts with the versatility they need and the fun they want?

The SQ5 is one option. Although it takes the form factor of a compact SUV, it drives more like a hot hatchback. The V-6 engine delivers a turbocharged rush, and with Quattro AWD, the SQ5's handling is grippy and agile. We only wish the steering felt less synthetic.

When it's not being driven maniacally, the SQ5 settles down and shows its luxurious side. With a comfortable and high-tech cabin, it makes a nice daily getaround. And the large cargo area provides space for life's needs. Those grown-up hot hatchback fans can have it both ways—the Audi SQ5 provides a desirable balance of performance and practicality.

Performance and Fuel Economy

The SQ5 uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 producing 349 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. That's connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard Quattro AWD. An optional performance differential better distributes power between the rear wheels. This setup enables a 4.7-second 0-60-mph launch according to our stopwatches. Fuel economy is rated by the EPA at 19/24 mpg city/highway.

How Sporty Is the SQ5 Sportback?

If you're willing to sacrifice a bit of space for the sake of style, check out the SQ5 Sportback. It has the same powertrain and features as the standard SQ5, just wearing sleek fastback styling that cuts the roof down into a coupe-like profile. Cargo capacity and rear headroom is reduced, but not by all that much. The SQ5 Sportback should be just as fun to drive as its regular-roofed counterpart. Safety Ratings and Features

Although the SQ5 has not been specifically evaluated, the Q5 on which it's based receives excellent safety ratings. From the NHTSA, the 2022 Q5 earned the highest five-star overall safety score. The IIHS deemed the Q5 a 2021 Top Safety Pick+, the agency's highest accolade.

Standard driver assist and active safety features include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear-end collision mitigation. Only the Premium Plus and Prestige trims get adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist.

Cargo Space and Interior Room

Against its BMW equivalent, the X3 M40i, the SQ5 offers a little more passenger space. However, cargo space is considerably less in the SQ5 compared to its rival.

Cargo space (behind first/second rows):

  • 2022 SQ5: 25.1/53.1 cubic feet
  • 2022 X3 M40i: 28.7/62.7 cubic feet

Headroom (first/second rows):

  • 2022 SQ5: 41.7/39.5 inches
  • 2022 X3 M40i: 41.1/39.1 inches

Legroom (first/second rows):

  • 2022 SQ5: 41.0/37.8 inches
  • 2022 X3 M40i: 40.3/36.4 inches

The SQ5 is equipped with a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Bluetooth connectivity and an integrated toll transponder. Premium trim models have a 7.0-inch gauge cluster display, while Premium Plus models receive the 12.3-inch all-digital Virtual Cockpit setup. Prestige models take things further with a head-up display, built-in navigation, and 360-degree camera system. The standard 10-speaker audio system can be replaced by a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium setup.

Recommended Trim

The good news is that every SQ5 trim enjoys the same sporty and luxurious feel. The bad news is that Audi charges extra for features commonly found on entry-level cars. Specifically, we're referring to adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist, which are huge helps in highway driving—and aren't included on the basic SQ5 Premium trim, which starts at about $55,000. Those features come on the $60,000 Premium Plus trim, which also brings niceties like a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, and digital gauge display. In our opinion, this is the sweet spot of the lineup. Above that is the $64,500 Prestige trim, maxed out with features like a head-up display and fancy LED headlights.
