2001 Audi TT Review

Unconventional design and subpar performance.

Reviewed by Automotive on

Overview

The Audi TT serves as a performance coupe that also sells as a convertible. It includes three sub-models of the coupe body style and two sub-models of the convertible. The Audi TT, although marketed as a performance coupe or roadster is better known for style than performance. The interior includes high-quality materials and eels comfortable, but the arrangement of the interior seems somewhat awkward. The low roof of the interior gives some larger drivers and passengers a cramped feeling, and the rear seat feels even more cramped than the front.

The Range

Body Styles: coupe, convertible
Engines: 1.8-liter I-4, 1.8-liter I-4
Transmissions: five-speed manual, six-speed manual
Models: Audi TT Coupe, Audi TT Convertible, Audi TT 180hp Quattro Coupe, Audi TT 225hp Quattro Coupe, Audi TT 225hp Quattro Convertible

What's New

For 2001, the Audi TT convertible joins the market. The convertible body style comes in the base model and the 225-hp Quattro sub-model. The interior and the chassis of the convertible remains the same as the coupe sub-models. The 225-hp Quattro Coupe also starts new for the 2001 model year.

Exterior

The 2001 Audi TT has a rear spoiler that gets added mostly for looks and style. The 16-inch wheels use alloy, and a temporary spare tire comes with new purchases. Variable intermittent wipers come standard on all sub-models, and a rear defogger helps keep the rear view clear in cold or foggy weather.

Interior

The front seats have enough room to be comfortable in all of the available sub-models of the 2001 Audi TT, but the rear seats of the coupe lack room for average-size passengers. The seats all cme upholstered in leather, and the front uses sport seats, adding to the interior’s impressive style. The rear seats have split-folding seatbacks. The six-way adjustable driver’s seat and six-way adjustable front-passenger seat come standard on all five TTs. The doors have a leather trim insert that helps the interior impress the passengers and gives the owner a sense of pride. The instrument panel insert is aluminum and the shift knob comes trimmed in aluminum and leather. The steering wheel also comes wrapped in leather. The automatic air-conditioning includes a built-in air filtration system. One 12-volt outlet provides an option for the interior of the 2001 Audi TT. Heated front windshield jets keep the windshield free of ice and humidity, ensuring a clearer view of where the Audi TT goes. Power features include power door locks, powered and heated exterior mirrors, and two one-touch power windows.

Performance & Handling

The base model and 180-hp Quattro sub-models of the 2001 Audi TT come with a turbocharged 180 horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder matched with a five-speed manual transmission. The 225-hp Quattro sub-models use a six-speed manual transmission. On the 225-hp Quattro sub-models all-wheel drive comes standard. Drivers who desire higher performance should get the 225-hp Quattro TT with the extra 45 horsepower. The five-speed and six-speed transmissions both receive positive reviews from previous drivers.

Safety

The 2001 Audi TT has side-impact bars to help protect everyone inside from damage caused by side collisions. Fog lights and driving lights increase visibility for the driver and also help the Audi TT remain visible to other drivers on the highway. The four-wheel anti-lock brake system comes equipped with a brake pad wear warning system to detect and warn against worn-out brake pads. The driver and front-passenger airbags include both front-collision and side-collision airbags. A panic alarm and a security system also come standard on all five sub-models of the 2001 Audit TT.
