First introduced eight years ago, the '09 Audi TT represents the second year of its first full redesign as both a roadster and a coupe. The new model is a bit larger than its predecessor but maintains a strong resemblance to the previous iteration with the large Audi grille, flared wheel arches and truncated rear deck treatment that includes a manually controlled spoiler.
Always an important design statement, the TT comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels with two variations of 18-inch alloys shod with low profile tires.
While there is a base 200 horsepower 2-liter inline-4, our test car came through with the powerful 3.2 V6 that is good for 250 horsepower and 236 pound feet of torque, delivering power to the optional "Quattro" All-Wheel-Drive system via an electronic sequential transmission. As would be expected on a sports car, a six-speed manual is also available.
Brakes are ventilated 4-wheel discs with ABS and hydraulic brake assistance.
Mileage for the Audi TT inline-4 is 21 miles per gallon city, 29 miles per gallon highway.
While the TT is listed as a four-passenger vehicle, we found the rear seat to be best for gym bags and umbrellas. For luggage or groceries the split/folding rear seat yielded a substantial 13.1 cubic feet of cargo space.
The all leather interior is highlighted by heated, adjustable sport seats and a multi-function leather-wrapped adjustable steering wheel that includes paddle shifters for the sequential gearbox.
The center dash console contains a Bose audio system with 6-disc CD changer, am/fm and Satellite radio with MP3 player and the automatic climate control system as well as the optional navigation system if selected.
Driver and passenger are protected by front and side impact airbags.
Base MSRP for the 2009 Audi TT is $35,200. The price of a fully loaded TT roadster can get as high as $55,000. The TT is backed by a 5-year/50,000-mile power train warranty.
The Audi TT Coupe and Convertible: Well worth a close look if you're in the market for a sharp-looking, solid performing upscale sports car.
