Castroneves' quick pit stop propels him to victory at Texas

Fort Worth, TX (Sports Network) - Helio Castroneves, the reigning Indianapolis 500 champion, never looked back after taking the lead following the final pit stop to capture Saturday night's Bombardier Learjet 550 at Texas Motor Speedway. The No. 3 Team Penske driver crossed the finish line 0.3904 seconds ahead of teammate Ryan Briscoe.

The victory was Castroneves' second of the season and 16th of his IndyCar career. The win gave Castroneves his third career triumph at Texas Motor Speedway and Team Penske its fifth victory in the last eight races at Texas.

"It feels fantastic. I jumped in front on the last pit stop and that was it," Castroneves said. "What a great win."

Following a caution flag for A.J. Foyt IV on lap 173, Briscoe led the field down pit road for the final stops of the night.

Castroneves, who was in the top-five for a majority of the race, used a quick six-second stop to beat Briscoe off pit road. Scott Dixon, Dario Franchitti and Marco Andretti followed behind.

When the race went back to green, Castroneves was able to hold onto the lead despite pressure from Briscoe.

Briscoe got within 0.2229 seconds with 25 laps remaining, but that was as close as he would get to his teammate the remainder of the way. Briscoe, who led 160 laps, has led a combined 314 of 453 laps over the last two races, but has finished second in both.

"I just couldn't pass Helio. The cars are so easily matched that it's hard to pass," Briscoe said.

Dixon, Andretti, and Franchitti completed the top-five.

Franchitti, who won his seventh career IndyCar Series pole on Friday, led the 24-car field to the green flag for 228 laps of high-speed racing.

The race quickly slowed down as the yellow flag came out on lap two for a big crash involving Graham Rahal, Milka Duno, and E.J. Viso. All three drivers were okay, but were forced to watch the rest of the race from the garage.

When the race went back to green on lap 10, Briscoe quickly pulled up to the high side of the track to battle for first. Briscoe was successful and made the pass for the top spot on the next lap. Dixon, Castroneves, and Danica Patrick rounded out the top-five.

Dan Wheldon and Andretti started a cycle of pit stops on lap 55. Briscoe led Franchitti, Dixon, Castroneves, and Wheldon after the stops.

Briscoe started to dominate the race at that point, pulling away to over a seven-second lead. Meanwhile, Dixon and Castroneves went by Franchitti for second and third, respectively, in a battle behind the leader. Andretti held onto the fifth position.

Wheldon and Andretti began another round of green flag stops on lap 105. Briscoe held an eight-second margin over Castroneves, Dixon, Franchitti, and Andretti when the stops were complete.

As Briscoe opened up an amazing 10-second gap, Andretti passed Dixon and Castroneves for second. The huge lead was erased when the second caution flag of the night flew for debris on lap 150, allowing the leaders to make their third stops of the race.

Briscoe led Andretti, Castroneves, Dixon, and Franchitti to the restart on lap 159. Castroneves and Dixon got around Andretti to take over second and third before the last caution flag flew.

Despite a second-place finish, Briscoe jumped to first in the point standings with 199 points. Dixon dropped to second and trails Briscoe by three points. Franchitti (188) holds the third spot.

The next race in the series is set for Sunday, June 21 at Iowa Speedway.
