Logano leads JGR front row sweep at Kentucky

Sparta, KY (Sports Network) - Joey Logano started his Nationwide Series race title defense at Kentucky Speedway on the right note by winning the pole for Saturday's Meijer 300.

Logano topped the qualifying charts with a lap at 174.865 m.p.h. (30.881 seconds) in his No.20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. He recorded his second pole of the season and the fifth of his Nationwide career. It was also his second pole at Kentucky.

One year ago, Logano captured his first Nationwide victory at Kentucky, becoming the youngest driver to win a series race at age 18 years, 21 days. He also started on the pole for that race.

"(Crew chief) Dave Rogers and the whole gang have done a great job with this car, it's been fast ever since we got here," Logano said. "We haven't got it driving just right, but we have been fast, so we got that going for us."

Kyle Busch qualified second at 174.848 m.p.h. to give JGR its first-ever front row sweep for a Nationwide race.

After finishing second in the 200-mile Camping World Truck Series race at Michigan, Busch arrived at Kentucky just in time to qualify, as he made a mad dash to the team hauler to change into his driver's suit. He then sprinted down pit road and quickly hopped into his car before rolling off for a two-lap attempt.

"I hadn't worked out in a while, so that felt pretty good," Busch said. "It was a good burn."

Justin Allgaier qualified third, followed by Michael Annett and Erik Darnell.

Brendan Gaughan, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Trevor Bayne, Brad Keselowski and Carl Edwards will start sixth through 10th, respectively.

Kelly Bires lost control of his car and smacked the wall during his warmup lap in qualifying. Bires will have to start from the rear of the field in his backup car.

Stanton Barrett also spun and crashed into the wall on the second lap of his qualifying attempt.

Jeff Green, J.C. Stout, Benny Gordon, Blake Bjorklund, Kevin Lepage and Travis Kittleson failed to qualify.

Today's race is schedule to start around 8:30 p.m. (et).
