Concord, NC (Sports Network) - Sam Hornish Jr. raced his way into the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race for the second consecutive year after winning Saturday's 40-lap Sprint Showdown preliminary event at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Hornish grabbed the lead from David Stremme with 15 laps to go and then pulled away from the field to secure the 19th starting position in the 100-lap feature race.

"I'm tired of having to race this way in there, but it's been fun and gives us a good idea what the track is like," Hornish said. "I'm just super happy to be in and racing for a million dollars."

Hornish claimed the 23rd starting spot in last year's all-star race after finishing second in the Sprint Showdown. He wound up seventh in the main event.

Jamie McMurray started 28th in the 35-car field and overcame oil smeared on his windshield in the opening laps to finish second and transfer to the 20th starting spot.

"It happened on the first lap, but when the oil was gone, it wasn't really that bad," McMurray said. "Then we went back green. They put some oil dry down, and when that hit the oil on the windshield, it started smearing and I really wanted to pit at that half-way point to put tires on, but I knew I wasn't going to make it back up through there."

Tony Raines spun on the third lap to bring out the first caution.

McMurray also made the field for the 2008 all-star race after gaining eligibility from his 2007 win in the summer event at Daytona.

Kirk Shelmerdine and Carl Long had secured the front row, since qualifying was rained out on Friday and the lineup was set by the qualifying order. But both drivers had to start from the rear of the field. Shelmerdine wrecked his car during practice, while Long made an engine change.

Stremme led the field to the green and ran out in front for the first 25 laps. Stremme ended up finishing third after McMurray passed him with 12 laps remaining.

Rookie Joey Logano won the Sprint Fan Vote to claim the final position in the 21-car field. Logano finished fifth in the Sprint Showdown.
