Sparta, Kentucky (Sports Network) - Johnny Benson led 94 of 150 laps to
capture Saturday night's Built Ford Tough 225 Craftsman Truck Series race at
the Kentucky Speedway. The No. 23 Toyota driver crossed the finish line 0.474
seconds ahead of Michael Annett.
The victory was Benson's second of the season and 11th of his truck career.
This was Benson's first win at the Kentucky Speedway.
"It ran good, but it wasn't easy today," said Benson, talking about his truck.
"It may have looked easy, but it was just a little slick out there today."
After a caution period for a multi-truck crash, Benson led the field to the
restart with 19 laps remaining in the race. Annett, Dennis Setzer, Matt
Crafton and David Starr followed behind.
Benson was able to hold onto the lead, despite a good restart from the 22-
year-old Annett.
The veteran Benson quickly pulled away from the youngster. Benson had a 0.837-
second margin with 10 laps to go.
Annett tried to make things interesting late by cutting into Benson's lead.
But it was too late, as Benson cruised into Victory Lane.
Crafton, Setzer and Starr completed the top-five.
After winning the pole earlier in the day, Mike Skinner led the 36-truck field
around the track for 150 laps of racing.
Kyle Busch took the first position away from Skinner on the first lap. Busch
was still in the lead when the first caution flag flew on lap four for a
Shelby Howard crash.
Jack Sprague had to come down pit road during the caution period because of a
motor problem.
Skinner tried multiple times to pass Busch, but his attempts failed. Benson
and Skinner battled for second.
The caution flag flew on lap 22. Most of the leaders took pit stops under
the caution. Busch, Skinner and Justin Marks decided to stay out on the track.
After the restart, the battled heated up for the lead. Skinner finally got
around Busch on lap 31. But Busch fought his way back and took back first just
six laps later.
Busch gave up the lead on lap 51 to make his first pit stop of the night. The
caution flag came out on the next lap due to a Chrissy Wallace incident.
Skinner led the leaders down pit road under the caution period for service.
Benson won the race off pit road and led Eric Darnell, Skinner, Marks and Todd
Bodine.
The race went under red flag conditions on lap 57 because some repair was
needed on the safer barrier that Wallace crashed into. The race was under the
red flag for about 10 minutes.
After a few laps under caution, the race went back to green flag conditions on
lap 60. Busch restarted in the 26th position.
Benson was able to maintain his lead on the restart. Skinner got past Darnell
in a battle for second.
Bodine had to make an unscheduled pit stop a few laps later because of a tire
problem. Crafton inherited the fifth spot.
The fifth caution flag of the night flew on lap 74 for debris.
The unscheduled stops continued on lap 82. This time it was Ron Hornaday Jr.,
the points leader, who had tire issues of his own. Hornaday Jr. took four
fresh tires.
Meanwhile, Benson continued to show the way, as the field started to spread
out. Skinner, Darnell, Marks and Crafton followed behind.
With 45 laps to go, Benson's margin was just over 2.5 seconds. His comfortable
gap was erased with 35 laps remaining when the caution flag came out for
debris. The leaders made their final stops of the race under the caution.
Different pit strategies played out on pit road. A two-tire stop by Annett
allowed him to win the race off pit road. Setzer also went with a two-tire
stop and came out second. Benson, Marc Mitchell (fuel only) and Skinner
completed the top-five.
The race went back to green with 31 laps to go. Benson got a great restart and
quickly found himself taking back the lead. Just moments later, the caution
flag flew for a multi-truck crash.
The incident started when Busch bumped Chad McCumbee into the wall. He
collected Marks and Darnell. Busch had a flat tire and was forced to come down
pit road for service during the caution.
After a lengthy caution, Benson brought the field to the green flag with 23
laps left. But just seconds after the restart, the eighth caution flag flew
for a wreck involving Brendan Gaughan, Bodine and Braun.
Benson built another comfortable lead on the restart with 19 laps to go.
The victory gives Benson the lead in the standings with 1881 points. Crafton
trails in second by just one point. Hornaday Jr., who held a 27-point lead
heading into the race, drops to third and is five points behind Benson.
The next race in the series is set for Friday, July 25th at the O'Reilly
Raceway Park.
