Kia Niro Concept Debut

Kia shows off a new urban hybrid vehicle at the 2014 Chicago Auto Show.

What's New

The Kia Niro Concept makes its official U.S. debut, hinting at a future hybrid Kia model that offers plenty of style and attitude. The new concept is powered by the automaker's turbocharged 1.6-liter Gamma engine that produces 160 horses, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. An electric hybrid powertrain has been added to the rear wheels, pumping out 45 more horsepower. Gregory Guillaume, Chief Designer, Kia Design Center Europe, said "It may have the looks of a Dakar [Rally] contender, but Niro has a strong premium feel thanks to our innovative use of advanced and modern materials that mix brawn with spirit to deliver a playful vehicle ready to be part of anyone's active lifestyle."

Who It's For

Kia's latest subcompact concept expands on Kia's hybrid electric powertrain and advanced four-wheel drive system. For those looking for an edgy, fuel-efficient vehicle may want to check out Kia's latest offering that features a two-tone exterior look. Paired with the "Nightfall" exterior color is a brushed, stainless-steel roof, along with Kia's signature grille. Butterfly doors open to show off the interior, featuring "Volcano Black" leather on the dash and steering wheel, with either the anodized black or "Limelight" aluminum trim. Although this may be a subcompact, Kia has gone through great lengths to make this concept appear luxurious and high-tech.

Key Features

Kia has been on a mission to improve its image and create better vehicles, and this concept is no exception.
  • Two-tone exterior
  • Upscale interior
  • Powerful electric hybrid powertrain

What We Think

Kia has come a long way, and with hopes to move more upmarket with the K900, that may be a possibility. With the Niro concept, Kia is trying something different, and if this car enters production, it will be a big hit. Many customers will enjoy the power and fuel efficiency, and the high-quality materials that fill the cabin will give it that little something extra that you don't find on many of its potential competitors.
