What's New

The Audi SQ5 builds upon the German luxury automaker's chic and cutesy Q5 crossover, but the SQ5 ditches the cute and brings a new aggressive demeanor to match its performance. The SQ5 raises the Q5's already very good and available 3.0-liter supercharged 272-hp engine, and ups it to a 354-hp 3.0-liter engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with shift paddles. In Europe the SQ5 gets a diesel engine, but the U.S. market gets the same gasoline engine used in the S5. 20-inch wheels come standard, and 21¬inch wheels are available, and all SQ5's come with all-wheel-drive. The performance-inspired crossover comes with two exclusive "crystal-effect" finishes for the exterior: Estoril Blue and Panther Black. Inside the SQ5 is "bathed in black" and comes with many premium touches, as we've come to expect from Audi, including Nappa leather and Alcantara. The instrument controls feature gray dials and white numerals.

Who It's For

The 2014 Audi SQ5 is a performance-inspired crossover, with the guts of a legitimate sports car. This isn't a soccer-mom crossover, or casual stroll to the market ride. The 2014 SQ5 can count on competition with its chief German rival's BMW X3 xDrive35i. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 represents an American alternative, and a formidable one at that. The SRT8 version of the Cherokee boasts a 6.4-liter 470-hp V-8 that can hold its own performance-wise.

Key Features

The 2014 SQ5 is a luxury crossover with the guts of a sports car.
  • Aggressive styling, compared with the Q5, 20-inch wheels are standard, 21-inch wheels are available.
  • Performance. The SQ5 employs supercharged 3.0T that cranks out 354-hp paired to an eight-speed tiptronic transmission.
  • Sumptuous interior. Alcantara, Nappa leather, premium touches throughout.

What We Think

The 2014 Audi SQ5 ups the performance quotient of the Q5, and adds aggressive style and an even more premium interior. The SQ5 operates in a niche market, and is a unique offering in the segment. The competition from BMW and SRT8 are good, but all do a fine job of differentiating themselves. The Audi SQ5 delivers on a simultaneous promise of performance, luxury, and utility, and should be a veritable stud for its limited audience.
