What's New

Speculation about the Hybrid-R concept from Toyota has been circling for quite some time. However, we now know that this concept is based on the Toyota Yaris subcompact, using a specialized version of Toyota's hybrid technology. The Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R Concept is more of a showcase for the drivetrain than a sneak peek at a super-sporty future Yaris model. It uses Toyota's sports hybrid technology, resulting in a powertrain that can deliver more than 400 horsepower. It will be powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder Global Race Engine and two electric motors. This configuration offers the concept intelligent electric all-wheel drive, and also makes use of super-capacitor to store more energy, similar to what can be seen on the TS030 Hybrid Le Mans car. Thanks to its unique powertrain, it can be used in a variety of racing categories.

Who It's For

Toyota has developed this new concept to offer drivers maximum driving pleasure, both for drivers on the road and track. However, it seems like this new concept is more comfortable on the track than the road, even though it is able to handle both. Hybrid powertrains are on the rise in up-and-coming sports cars, including recent supercars from Porsche and Ferrari. Thanks to their great fuel efficiency, many are buying up hybrids as soon as they hit the market. However, currently there aren't many powerful hybrid models out there, and the Yaris Hybrid-R Concept could definitely make some waves.

Key Features

It's hard to pinpoint the most standout features on the Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R Concept, but the 400+ horsepower hatchback does leave a good impression.
  • Electric all-wheel drive
  • Driving performance
  • Road and track capabilities

What We Think

We keep saying it and it doesn’t look like it's changing anytime soon. The time for the hybrid is now, especially with the debut of the Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R Concept. This track-ready hatchback will be one of the most powerful compact hybrid vehicles on the road when it hits production. Sharing similarities with Toyota's Le Mans race car already gives the Yaris Hybrid-R Concept some good press. With its powerful and capable engines, we're excited to see where Toyota goes with this concept.
