2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Debut

A luxurious competitor to the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7.

What's New

For the first time ever, the BMW 6 Series will be offered with more than two doors. Introduced at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, the 2013 BMW 6 Gran Coupe is a four-door version, designed to go head to head with stylish coupe-like sedans such as the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and the new Audi A7. Besides a few new crinkles in the sheet metal and the addition of two more doors the 6 Series Gran Coupe is almost a carbon copy of the coupe and convertible that is already available to the masses. Where the Gran Coupe really earns its name is in the stretching the body by 4.5 inches, and widening it an additional 4.4 inches to earn the title of a "Gran Coupe."

Who's It For

If you're a die-hard BMW fan, but crave the slick looks of the Audi A7 and Mercedes-Benz CLS, then the 6 Series Gran Coupe should do the trick. A starting price of $74,425, including an $875 destination charge, should be a telling sign of who will purchase this sedan. If price isn't an issue for you then you may want to have a look under the hood as your choice of a 3.0-liter inline-six or a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 waits in the engine bay. BMW claims the 6 Series Gran Coupe can eclipse 60 mph from a standstill in 5.4 seconds when outfitted with the bigger engine, so it's safe to say two kinds of people will be interested in this car: those who like how it looks and can afford it; and those who like speed combined with sophisticated styling...and can afford it.

Key Features

The 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe showcases a lot of features seen on both the coupe and convertible versions of the 6 Series. Some of these include:
  • A twin-turbo 4.4-liter engine rated at 445 horsepower or a 3.0-liter inline six responsible for 315 horsepower.
  • An exclusive Opal White interior can line the inside of the 6 Series Gran Coupe, and the Gran Coupe is the only vehicle in BMW's stable to have it.
  • Features like stability control and parking sensors to a 360-degree Top View Camera can be found in the 6 Series Gran Coupe.
  • With an entry price tag of $74,425 you can bet there won't be too many of these rolling around town.

What We Think

What's not to like about a big BMW that's filled with all of the latest technology and a robust engine selection to boot. We feel the 6 Series Gran Coupe is more than adequate to compete against the likes of the Audi A7 and the Mercedes-Benz CLS. The price tag may scare some people off, but it's comparable to the competition and provides a feeling of exclusiveness. With the addition of the 6 Series Gran Coupe, the large luxury sedan segment just got a little more crowded, and we expect BMW to steal away some potential buyers from fellow German automakers Audi and Mercedes-Benz. The 2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe will make its North American debut at the New York Auto Show next month and is expected to go on sale in early summer of 2012.
