2014 Hyundai Elantra Debut

They say with age comes maturity. In the case of the Hyundai Elantra, the exact opposite is true. When it originally debuted, the Hyundai Elantra was regarded as a more avant-garde version of the tried-and-true Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. For 2014, the young Elantra still retains much of the flair of its predecessor, but it is expressed in a more mature, sedate manner. Its new design language is less polarizing, featuring a more sophisticated front end with fewer swoops and more angular lines.

More power is coming to the Elantra in the form of a 2.0-liter "Nu" GDI engine producing 173 horsepower. This will be offered on a new Sport trim for the sedan as well as on the coupe and GT models. Also offered on the Elantra sedan is a 1.8-liter "Nu" four-cylinder producing 145 hrosepower and 28/38 mpg city/highway.

Not only has Hyundai made changes on the design and powertrain options, but it has also crafted a more refined interior. Buyers can expect more simplified controls; the center stack HVAC vents are relocated.

Who It's For

Traditionally, Hyundai has been good at packing in the features. Buyers who are looking for the most technology and convenience features for their money will likely find a happy home with the Elantra. Practical minded buyers will also enjoy Hyundai's famous 10-year warranty. But each competitor in this crowded segment has distinct advantages: Take the fuel-efficient Chevrolet Cruze, the sprightly Mazda3, and the well-rounded Ford Focus. The Elantra has long been a favorite among buyers concerned with value. But expect a few new features and trims for the new model year.

What We Think

When it was introduced, the Hyundai Elantra was an exciting alternative vehicle in the "boring" mainstream compact car segment. But now the competition has risen to the challenge, and the Elantra hasn't been as appealing as it once was. With the new 2014 Elantra, we feel Hyundai is going in the right direction to make the car more mature, better performing, and more appealing to a wider audience. We've always liked the value proposition offered by Hyundai in the Elantra sedan, and we are curious to see the final changes.
