What's New

Things are quickly evolving at Mercedes-Benz, and a new slew of more accessibly priced luxury vehicles are making their way to America. The Mercedes-Benz Concept GLA45 AMG previews what will be the performance version of the new GLA250 crossover. What does the AMG treatment do? For starters, the most powerful four-cylinder production engine in the world replaces the GLA250's engine;this much more potent 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged powerplant puts out an impressive 355 horsepower. Power is delivered to all four wheels via an AMG Speedshift dual-clutch seven-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. And with the added power, comes a sports car-quick sub-five second 0-60 mph time. The Concept GLA45 AMG also enhances the GLA250's attractive crossover styling with sporty touches such as unique AMG forged wheels with a cross-spoke design. The wheels are painted matte black with a red rim flange, and high-performance brakes with red calipers. A performance exhaust system, and the usual complement of AMG badges and trim are present on the performance crossover.

Who It's For

Like the GLA250, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA45 AMG, as previewed by this concept, will look to lure a younger demographic to the Mercedes brand. While the GLA250 looks great, the GLA45 AMG will add even more aggressive styling, and the performance to back it up. We expect the GLA45 AMG to command a starting price of about $50,000, making the AMG performance brand--like the CLA45 AMG--more accessible to a wider audience. While the CLA250 competes with the BMW X1, the CLA45 AMG doesn't exactly have direct competitors in the U.S., buyers may cross-shop the Audi SQ5 performance crossover. It's also likely that Audi and BMW will continue to expand American ranges, and we'll see more variants of this nature in the coming years.

What We Think

The Mercedes-Benz Concept GLA45 AMG previews the performance version of the GLA250 crossover. True to AMG's brand heritage, the GLA45 AMG adds performance in the form of a 355-hp twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter engine paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters, 4Matic all-wheel drive, and unique wheels and AMG brakes. Just as the GLA250 broadens the possible market with an accessible price of entry, the GLA45 AMG will be priced just above the CLA45 AMG, and will offer accessible performance with crossover functionality. While we're still at least a year away from a production version of the GLA45 AMG crossover hitting showrooms, we think the vehicle will help increase AMG sales and broaden the AMG performance envelope.
